Chapter 3 - The Queen's Throne

The silence in the room was so thick it felt physical.

Ryan stood frozen in the doorway, his hand still gripping the brass handle. Behind him, Emily gasped, her coffee cup rattling against its saucer.

"Clare?" Ryan finally managed to speak, his voice cracking slightly before he forced his usual booming tone back into his throat. "What the hell are you doing here? How did you even get past security?"

He looked around the table, his face flushing red with embarrassment and anger. "Gentlemen, I apologize for this. My... soon-to-be-ex-wife seems to have had some sort of mental breakdown after last night. Security! Someone call security and have this woman escorted out of the building immediately!"

None of the board members moved.

Old Mr. Harrison, the senior board member who had known Ryan’s father, slowly lowered his gaze to the table, refusing to meet Ryan's eyes.

"Ryan," Harrison said, his voice quiet and trembling. "Sit down."

"Sit down?" Ryan barked, taking a step forward, his chest heaving. "Harrison, she’s sitting in my chair! This is a highly confidential meeting with the owners of Everest Holdings! She has no right to be in this room, let alone at this table!"

Clare slowly leaned forward, resting her elbows on the polished mahogany. The gold wedding ring was nowhere to be seen on her fingers. Instead, she wore a massive, flawless blue diamond ring on her right index finger—the seal of the Bennett family trust.

"Actually, Ryan," Clare said, her voice cool, measured, and completely dominant. "I have every right. In fact, I am the only person in this room who does."

Ryan let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "What are you talking about? Did you sneak in here to play dress-up? Did you steal that suit? Clare, stop embarrassing yourself. Go home. We’ll discuss the divorce settlement through my lawyers."

Clare looked up at Marcus, who was standing quietly in the corner of the room.

Marcus stepped forward and slid a thick leather folder across the long table. It stopped precisely in front of Ryan.

"Open it, Mr. Carter," Marcus said.

Ryan stared at the folder like it was a venomous snake. "What is this?"

"That," Clare said, "is the complete corporate filing of Everest Holdings, along with the certified share registry of Vertex Dynamics as of 5:00 PM yesterday."

With trembling fingers, Ryan flipped the folder open. Emily crowded behind his shoulder, her eyes scanning the pages desperately.

Ryan’s eyes raced down the legal jargon, skipping the preamble, looking for the name of the managing partner. His gaze locked onto the final page, where the corporate seal of Everest Holdings was stamped in gold foil.

Directly above the seal, in elegant, flowing script, was the signature of the Chief Executive Officer and majority shareholder of Everest Holdings:

Clare Bennett-Carter.

The papers slipped from Ryan's fingers, scattering across the table. His face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ghostly white.

"This... this is a forgery," Ryan whispered, his voice shaking violently. "This is impossible. Everest Holdings is a multi-billion dollar private equity firm. You’re... you’re just a housewife! You don't have this kind of money!"

"I told you, Ryan," Clare said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, soft whisper. "I run a little business from home."

"A little business?" Emily shrieked, her composure completely shattering. "You bought our company? With what? Ryan’s money? You stole his money!"

Clare didn't even look at Emily. To Clare, Emily was nothing more than a minor annoyance, a symptom of Ryan's stupidity.

"My grandfather was Arthur Bennett, the founder of Bennett Maritime," Clare explained to the board, ignoring the two panicking lovers. "When he passed ten years ago, his entire estate was placed into a private trust. I am the sole trustee. Seven years ago, when I married Ryan, I chose to keep my family’s wealth separate to see if my husband loved me for who I was, or for what I possessed."

She looked at Ryan, a faint, mocking smile touching her lips.

"You failed that test, Ryan. Spectacularly."

"Clare... honey," Ryan stammered, taking a desperate step toward her, his arrogant posture instantly collapsing into a pathetic, pleading crouch. "Listen to me. Last night... last night was a mistake. I was stressed. The pressure of the buyout... I didn't mean any of it. We’ve been married for seven years! We built this together!"

"You built nothing," Clare corrected him sharply. "You signed papers that my advisors drafted for you. You took credit for strategies that I whispered in your ear while you slept. And while I was protecting you, you were using my company’s expense accounts to buy diamond tennis bracelets for your 'strategic partner'."

She slid a second, smaller document across the table.

"That is an internal audit conducted by Everest’s forensic team over the last forty-eight hours," Clare said. "It details over two million dollars in unauthorized corporate expenditures attributed directly to you, Ryan. Luxury apartments, vacations to the Maldives, designer clothes—all billed to Vertex Dynamics under the guise of 'client entertainment'."

She looked at the board of directors. "Gentlemen, as the majority shareholder, I am proposing an immediate vote to terminate Ryan Carter as Chief Executive Officer of Vertex Dynamics, effective immediately, for gross misconduct and embezzlement of corporate funds."

Old Mr. Harrison raised his hand first. "Approved."

One by one, every single board member raised their hand.

Ryan watched them, his world turning upside down in the span of five minutes. "You can't do this to me," he gasped. "I made this company!"

"No, Ryan," Clare said, standing up. "I bought this company. And now, I’m cleaning house."
