Chapter 3 - The Shell Game Collapses

"I wouldn't rely too heavily on those investors, Celeste," I said, walking slowly toward her. "Because they just realized you've been robbing them blindly for the last eighteen months."

Arthur Pendelton stood up, his face grim. "Is this report accurate? These numbers... they show over fourteen million dollars diverted from our primary supply chain logistics into an offshore entity called 'CV Development Partners'."

Grant’s eyes went wide. He looked at Celeste, then back at the document in Arthur's hands. "What? Fourteen million? Celeste, you told me it was only three million to cover the initial real estate acquisition!"

"You idiot!" Celeste screamed at Grant, completely blowing their alliance apart in front of the entire boardroom. "Don't say another word!"

"Oh, please, keep talking, Grant," I encouraged him, pulling up a tablet connected to the ballroom's massive projection screen. With a single swipe, the beautiful holiday slideshow of snowy landscapes was replaced by a massive spreadsheet filled with red highlighting.

"As a certified forensic accountant, I found it fascinating how many shell vendors were approved while Grandma Beatrice was fighting for her life in the ICU," I explained to the captivated audience. "Here we have electronic authorizations for millions of dollars, signed by Beatrice Vance. But look at the timestamps. March 14th at 3:14 AM. March 22nd at 1:45 AM. According to the ICU medical logs attached right next to them, Grandma was under heavy medical sedation during those exact hours."

I zoomed in on the digital signature logs. "The IP addresses used to bypass the corporate security protocols didn't come from the hospital. They originated from two specific locations: Grant’s private office at the firm, and Celeste’s master bedroom suite right upstairs."

The crowd erupted into chaotic shouting. Several board members pulled out their phones, frantically calling their legal teams. The photographers Celeste had hired to document her 'coronation' were now taking rapid-fire photos of the incriminating financial evidence on the screen.

"This is a setup! It’s digital manipulation!" Grant yelled, trying to run toward the projection booth. The security guards grabbed him by the shoulders, pinning him against the wall. "Let go of me! She's lying! She’s always been unstable since her father died!"

"My father died because he discovered what Celeste was doing to the family books ten years ago," I said, my voice dropping to a icy, lethal whisper that carried across the quieted room. "I couldn't prove it then. I was young, shocked, and easily manipulated by a stepmother who isolated me from everyone who loved me. But Grandma Beatrice knew. She stayed alive just long enough to ensure I had the keys to the kingdom to finish what my father started."

Celeste tried to straighten her posture, attempting to summon the elite snobbery she had used to terrorize me for a decade. "Even if you have the shares, you don't have the liquid capital to keep the company afloat if the investors pull out tonight. You've destroyed the family name in a single evening. You've ruined us all!"

"I haven't ruined the family, Celeste. I've pruned the dead weight," I countered. "And as for the liquid capital..." I turned to Arthur Pendelton. "Arthur, if you look at the final page of the report, you'll see that the state authorities froze the accounts of 'CV Development Partners' roughly two hours ago based on my emergency forensic filing. The fourteen million dollars has been recovered and is currently being transferred back into the Vance corporate treasury."

Celeste’s eyes rolled back slightly, and she had to catch herself against the champagne fountain. The cold water soaked the sleeve of her designer dress, but she didn't even seem to notice.
