Chapter 3 - THE THIRD-FLOOR SIEGE

“Over my dead body,” Sarah snarled, springing up from her chair.
“Stay here, Ms. Thorne,” Detective Miller ordered, unholstering his radio. “I’m calling for backup. The hospital is under private security lockdown until this judge's order is verified.”
“You don't understand how David operates!” I yelled, attempting to swing my legs over the side of the hospital bed. The sudden movement sent a jagged bolt of agony through my surgical incision, making me gasp and double over.
“Emily, don't move!” Sarah caught my shoulders, pushing me back down gently. “You just had major surgery!”
“He bought that judge,” I wheezed, clutching my stomach. “David’s spent thirty years networking in the municipal court system. He knows every corrupt magistrate in this county. If he gets his hands on Maeve’s discharge paperwork under a emergency temporary guardianship order, he can take her out of state before sunrise!”
“Not if I have anything to say about it,” Sarah said. She reached into her coat, pulling out a thick manila folder. “While you were in surgery, Em, I didn't just sit in the waiting room. I made a phone call to someone you haven't talked to in five years.”
I looked at her, bewildered. “Who?”
“Julian Vance.”
I froze. Julian Vance was Michael’s older brother—the estranged son who had cut ties with David a decade ago, walked away from the family fortune, and vanished into the high-stakes world of federal prosecution in Chicago.
“Julian?” I gasped. “How... why?”
“Because Julian knew what his father was capable of,” Sarah said, opening the folder. “When I called him and told him David had physically dragged you off an ambulance and forged your signature, Julian didn't even hesitate. He took a private charter flight. His plane landed twenty minutes ago.”
Suddenly, loud shouting echoed down the corridor outside my room.
The heavy glass doors at the end of the hall rattled. I could hear David’s booming, arrogant voice ringing across the unit.
“I have a signed order from Judge Harrison!” David roared at the hospital staff. “This hospital is interfering with the lawful custody of a minor! Move out of my way or I will have every single person on this floor arrested for kidnapping!”
Through the window in my room door, I watched the scene unfold in the hallway.
David was standing in front of the NICU security doors, flanked by three muscular men in black suits. Behind him stood Michael, looking unkempt, his eyes twitching nervously, his hands buried deep in his jacket pockets.
Opposite them stood hospital security, arms crossed, refusing to budge.
“You’re not going through those doors, Mr. Vance,” the chief of hospital security said calmly.
“I have the legal authority!” David yelled, shoving the paper into the officer's face. “My son is the legal father, and the mother is currently sedated and mentally unstable, as evidenced by her assault charges against us! Read the document!”
“I’ve read it,” a deep, commanding voice interrupted from the far end of the hallway. “And it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on.”
David whirled around, his smug expression instantly freezing into a mask of pure fury.
Walking down the hall was a tall man in a tailored dark suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. His jawline was identical to Michael’s, but his eyes carried a sharp, deadly authority that Michael had never possessed.
It was Julian.
“What are you doing here, Julian?” David hissed, his voice dropping into a dangerous, guttural tone. “You were disowned ten years ago. You have no standing here.”
“I’m not here as your son, David,” Julian said smoothly, stopping a few feet away from his father. “I’m here as the special prosecutor appointed by the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Task Force. And as of twenty minutes ago, Judge Harrison’s emergency order has been stayed by the Federal District Court.”
Michael gasped, taking an involuntary step back. “Julian... please...”
“Shut your mouth, Michael!” David snapped, turning back to Julian. “You think you can come back here and ruin this family? Everything I built was for you two!”
“You built an empire on fraud, extortion, and abuse,” Julian replied, pulling a stack of federal warrants from his briefcase. “And tonight, you tried to steal a child from a mother you physically assaulted on hospital grounds.”
Julian turned his gaze to Michael, his eyes softening slightly with pity before hardening back into steel.
“Michael, you have a choice right now. You can either stand beside David and be processed as a co-conspirator in federal wire fraud, document forgery, and aggravated assault—or you can step away from him and hand over the encryption keys to the server in your basement.”
Michael looked at David, then looked at Julian. His chest heaved as panic overwhelmed him.
“Don't you dare, Michael!” David screamed, grabbing Michael’s arm. “If you break, you get nothing! I will leave you with zero!”
Michael looked down at his father’s hand—the same controlling grip that had guided his entire life, the same grip that had dragged me off an ambulance just hours ago.
Slowly, painfully, Michael yanked his arm free.
“The key password is 'Maeve2026',” Michael whispered, tears streaming down his face. “Everything is in the hidden partition.”
David’s face turned purple with rage. “You coward! You pathetic coward!”
David raised his fist to strike his own son, but before he could make contact, two federal marshals rushed from the stairwell, tackling David to the floor and slamming him against the cold tile.

Handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, final sound.
Inside my room, I let out a long, shuddering breath, sinking back into my pillows. The war was far from over, but for the first time in years, the air felt clean enough to breathe.
