Chapter 1 - The Prescription of Betrayal

The morning sun usually brought a sense of quiet routine to our San Diego home, but today, the kitchen felt like a crime scene. Julian sat frozen at the dining table, his spoon hovering over his cereal bowl. His eyes darted between his mother, Eleanor, and the ceramic mug sitting untouched in front of me.
“Mom,” Julian repeated, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an edge of panic I had never heard before. “What’s in Nora’s tea that Chloe isn't allowed to drink? Answer me.”
Eleanor’s hands trembled. The grandmotherly warmth that had fooled me for a decade vanished, replaced by a cold, trapped panic. She opened her mouth, but no words came out.
I didn't wait for her to lie. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the printed pharmacy receipt bearing the name David Vance, and slammed it onto the granite countertop.
“Does this name ring a bell, Julian?” I asked, staring directly into my husband’s eyes. “Because it’s not your mother’s name. And it certainly isn't mine.”
Julian flinched as if he had been physically struck. He stared at the slip of paper, his face turning an alarming shade of pale. For a split second, guilt flashed across his features—a guilt far too heavy for a man who was supposedly just discovering this.
“Nora… where did you get that?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking.
“Found it under the poison your mother has been feeding me for months,” I snapped, my voice shaking with adrenaline. “Sienna at the hospital confirmed it. Immunosuppressants, Julian. Slow poisoning. And someone in this house has been helping her acquire it.”

Chloe whimpered, burying her face in my skirt. I scooped her up, my heart hammering against my ribs. I couldn't stay in this house another second. With a final, piercing look at the man I had loved and trusted for twelve years, I grabbed my daughter, walked out the front door, and drove straight to the hospital to lock myself in Sienna’s secure office.
Little did I know, the poison in my tea was only the surface layer of a much deeper, more sinister conspiracy.
