Chapter 8 - THE MAFIA QUEEN'S REIGNFIVE YEARS LATER

The sun rose over the Long Island sound, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and violet.

The Rossi estate had completely transformed. The gloomy, stone angels were replaced by lush gardens, playgrounds, and sprawling green lawns.

Five-year-old Lily-Leo Rossi ran across the grass, her dark curly hair flying in the wind, her bright laugh ringing through the air. She was wearing a pink sundress, chased by two massive, gentle German Shepherds that had been trained to guard her with their lives.

On the grand marble terrace overlooking the ocean, Lorenzo Rossi sat at a wrought-iron table, sipping black coffee. He looked relaxed, powerful, and deeply content.

Hunter stepped out onto the terrace, wearing a chic tailored white pantsuit, her dark hair styled elegantly. She looked every bit the feared, respected, and beloved Matriarch of the Rossi Empire.

Over the past five years, Hunter hadn't just become Lorenzo’s wife; she had become his co-ruler. She had spearheaded the transition of the Rossi syndicate away from illegal street operations into legitimate global logistics, renewable energy, and international real estate. The streets of New York no longer feared the Rossi name for its violence—they feared it for its absolute, untouchable economic power.

"She has your temper," Lorenzo said with a smile, watching little Lily-Leo tackle one of the dogs into the grass.

"She has your stubborness," Hunter countered, sitting down beside him and taking his hand. "She spent twenty minutes this morning arguing with her tutor that she shouldn't have to learn Italian because she already speaks 'princess'."

Lorenzo laughed—a rich, deep sound that now echoed frequently through the mansion. He raised Hunter’s hand to his lips, kissing her knuckle where a massive diamond ring glittered in the morning sun.

"I received a report from the prison in upstate New York this morning," Lorenzo said casually, his voice dropping into a quiet tone. "Tommy Vance’s appeal was rejected for the final time. He will spend the next forty years in a maximum-security cell."

Hunter didn't blink. Tommy Vance was a ghost from a past life—a life that felt like it belonged to someone else entirely.

"Good," Hunter said simply. "He gets to live with his choices."

A black SUV pulled up to the circular driveway below. Gianni stepped out, holding a leather document portfolio, and walked up the stairs to the terrace. He bowed his head respectfully to Hunter first, then to Lorenzo.

"Boss. Madam Rossi," Gianni said smoothly. "The Moretti legacy properties in Brooklyn have been completely liquidated. The proceeds—forty million dollars—have been transferred to the Lily Higgins Foundation for Abused Mothers."

"Thank you, Gianni," Hunter said with a calm, commanding authority. "Make sure the new shelter in Queens opens by the end of the month."

"Right away, Madam," Gianni bowed and retreated into the house.

Lorenzo looked at his wife with unfeigned admiration. "You turned a bloody empire into a force that saves thousands of lives, Hunter. My father would have called you crazy. I call you a genius."

"I just know what it’s like to be helpless," Hunter said softly, leaning her head against Lorenzo’s shoulder. "And as long as I wear this ring, no woman or child in this city will ever feel the way I felt five years ago."

Little Lily-Leo came running up the terrace stairs, her knees covered in grass stains, holding a bright yellow wildflower she had plucked from the garden.

"Look, Mommy! Look, Daddy!" the little girl beamed, thrusting the flower toward Hunter. "I found the prettiest one in the garden for you!"

Hunter knelt down, gathering her daughter into a warm, fierce embrace—the very same embrace that had saved both of their lives in a darkened, bulletproof nursery five years ago.

"It's beautiful, my sweet girl," Hunter whispered, kissing her daughter's cheek. "Just like you."

Lorenzo knelt down beside them, wrapping his arms around his wife and daughter. The cold, broken man who had once ruled through fear and blood was gone. In his place stood a king who had been saved by the maid he had once pointed a gun at—a woman who had proven that even in the darkest world of crime and death, the force of a mother's love was the most lethal, powerful thing on earth.
