Chapter 2 - THE PAPER TRAILLinda’s hand dropped from the air. Her eyes darted from me to the federal agents who were now pulling Jack to his feet.

"M-My part?" Linda stuttered, her voice stripped of all its usual condescension. "I don't know what you're talking about. I’m an innocent elderly woman! I have nothing to do with Jack’s business!"

"Is that so?" I reached into the silver dish, picked up the manila folder, and flipped it open to a flagged page highlighted in yellow. "Then perhaps you can explain why $400,000 of embezzled client funds were funneled into Linda Thompson’s Antique Holdings LLC over the last ninety days?"

Jack lifted his head from the table, gravy dripping from his chin, his eyes wide with absolute panic. "Claire, don't! Leave my mother out of this!"

"She threw herself into this the moment she helped you hide the paper paper trail," I said coldly, looking directly at Linda. "Every time Jack hit me, every time he locked me out of the bedroom, you knew. You didn't just ignore it, Linda—you rewarded him. You helped him set up dummy accounts to store his stolen loot because you were taking a fifteen percent cut to pay off your gambling debts at the coast."

"You... you evil, ungrateful little monster!" Linda shrieked, lunging at me with her nails aimed for my face.

Marcus casually stepped into her path, placing a solid arm in front of her. "I’d suggest you sit back down, Mrs. Thompson. The FBI field officers waiting outside are very interested in speaking with you, too."

Linda collapsed into her chair, her body trembling uncontrollably as her precious veneer of Southern high society disintegrated in front of her eyes.

Jack was dragged toward the front door, struggling against the officers' grips. "Claire! You think you’ve won?! You have nothing! Everything in this house is in my name! The cars, the land, the bank accounts—it’s ALL MINE! You’re going to be left with absolute zero!"

I walked slowly over to the hallway where Jack was being held by the agents. I stopped right in front of him, looking down at his pathetic, gravy-stained face.

"That’s where you're wrong, Jack," I said smoothly, reaching into my pocket and pulling out a folded document stamped with an official court seal. "Three weeks ago, when I uncovered your offshore accounts, I didn't just call Marcus. I filed a quiet, emergency petition with the asset-forfeiture court. Because every single dollar you used to buy this estate came from illegal wire transfers, the state has seized all of your assets."

Jack stared at the paper in horror.

"The house isn't yours," I continued, leaning in close. "The sports car in the garage isn't yours. Even the watch on your wrist was purchased with embezzled money. You own nothing, Jack. Except the clothes on your back and the prison uniform they're about to hand you."

"You planned this..." Jack whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and absolute fear. "Every single day... you were pretending..."

"I wasn't pretending," I replied, my voice dropping to a icy whisper that only he could hear. "I was surviving. And while you were busy flexing your power by putting your hands on me, I was building your cage."

"Get him out of here," Marcus ordered the officers.

Jack was pushed out the front door into the crisp morning air, screaming obscenities that echoed across the quiet, tree-lined suburban street. Neighborhood windows were already opening; onlookers were stepping onto their porches, pulling out their phones to film the grand fall of the golden boy, Jack Thompson.

Linda sat weeping loudly in the dining room, surrounded by untouched food, shattered porcelain, and ruined family pride.

Marcus turned to me, adjusting his suit jacket. "The board is deeply indebted to you, Claire. If you hadn't brought this evidence directly to my estate last night, our firm would have been ruined by the SEC before the end of the month."

"I just wanted justice, Marcus," I said softly, feeling the deep ache in my lip finally catch up to me.

"You'll get it," Marcus said solemnly. "The prosecution is seeking fifteen years for the fraud alone. But Claire... there's something else you need to know. Something we found in Jack’s personal drive right before we came here."

I frowned, sensing a cold knot tighten in my stomach. "What?"

Marcus hesitated, looking around the grand house before leaning in. "Evelyn Reed—the woman whose name is on the offshore account. She isn't just a fake identity or a mistress, Claire."

"Who is she?"

"She was Jack’s first wife," Marcus revealed, his voice dark. "The one he reported missing seven years ago in Savannah."
