Chapter 10 - The Green Door and the MiracleSomething shifted in Michael’s eyes. A spark of pure, desperate will reignited.

With a guttural roar of effort, he let go of the root with one hand and lunged upward into the blinding snow.

Grant lunged forward, locking his iron grip around Michael’s wrist. With a surge of adrenaline he didn't know he possessed, Grant heaved upward, dragging the freezing, exhausted man over the edge of the cliff and onto the solid, safe earth.

Both men collapsed onto the snow, chest heaving, coughing and gasping for air as the blizzard raged around them.

Before Michael could even process what had happened, a small body launched itself onto his chest.

"Daddy! Daddy!" Ellie sobbed, burying her face into his wet, freezing jacket.

Michael wrapped his arms around her so tightly as if afraid she would dissolve into the snow. He wept openly, pressing kisses into her frozen hair, whispering over and over again, "I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry."

Grant pushed himself up onto his knees, wiping the snow from his face. In the distance, flashing red and blue lights pierced the whiteout—the state troopers had finally broken through the blockade.

A moment later, Vance and three emergency medics rushed up the trail with thermal blankets and medical kits, shouting to make sure everyone was safe.

Six Months Later...

The sun was shining brightly over a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood in the suburbs.

Ellie skipped across the lush green lawn, her bright yellow dress catching the summer breeze. She ran up the steps of a charming, two-story house with a freshly painted bright green front door, pushing it open to run inside.

Sitting on the front porch rocking chair, drinking coffee, were Michael and Grant.

Michael looked healthy now—strong, rested, and wearing the uniform of a senior project manager for Mercer Residential Holdings, running his own construction crew with dignity and fair pay.

"She really loves that door, you know," Michael smiled, shaking his head as he looked at Grant.

Grant smiled back, taking a sip of his coffee. "Every little girl deserves a home with a green door, Michael. And every father deserves a second chance."

Michael reached across the table and shook Grant’s hand firmly. "Thank you, Grant. For everything."

"Merry Christmas in July, my friend," Grant laughed, raising his mug to toast the morning sun.
