Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Trap

The night of the annual Sterling Global Gala was the most prestigious event of the year.

Held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, the room was a glittering sea of diamonds, tuxedos, and champagne. The city’s elite—politicians, CEOs, celebrities, and industry titans—were all in attendance.

Marcus and Sarah arrived early, looking like a couple who believed they were on the verge of taking over the world. Sarah was wearing a tight, emerald-green gown, her hand resting conspicuously over her flat stomach. Marcus was dressed in a sharp tuxedo, holding a glass of expensive champagne, laughing loudly with several board members.

They believed tonight was their night.

Marcus had successfully initiated the data transfer—or so he thought. Clare had signed the approval, but David’s security team had rerouted the data stream to a secure, monitored decoy server, capturing every IP address, password, and bank account Marcus used in the process.

They had also leaked a rumor to Marcus that Harrison Vance was planning to announce Marcus’s promotion to Managing Director of the new regional division at the gala tonight.

“Look at her,” Sarah whispered maliciously, nodding toward the entrance.

Clare had just entered the ballroom.

She was stunning. She wore a backless, midnight-blue silk gown that clung to her curves, her hair styled in elegant waves. Around her neck was a delicate, sparkling diamond necklace—a gift from David. She walked with the grace and authority of a queen, completely unfazed by the whispers around her.

David Sterling walked beside her, his hand lightly resting on the small of her back. They looked powerful. Unstoppable.

Marcus’s eyes darkened with jealousy and hatred. He nudged Sarah. “Enjoy it while it lasts, Clare. Tonight, your little empire crumbles.”

At 9:00 PM, Harrison Vance took the stage. He tapped his microphone, drawing the attention of the hundreds of guests in the room.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” Harrison smiled warmly. “As Managing Director of Vantage Media, a proud subsidiary of Sterling Global, I want to thank you all for joining us tonight. Tonight, we celebrate innovation, growth, and the incredible talent that drives our industry forward.”

Harrison looked toward Marcus and Sarah, who were standing near the front of the stage, smiling broadly.

“We are on the verge of launching our most ambitious project yet—the regional expansion of our creative division. And tonight, I am honored to invite our lead creative director, Marcus Avery, to the stage to present a sneak peek of the revolutionary strategy that will define our future.”

The crowd applauded. Marcus smoothed his tuxedo jacket, gave Sarah a quick kiss on the cheek, and walked up the steps to the stage with the supreme confidence of a man who had won.

He took his place at the podium, looking down at the crowd. He caught Clare’s eye, giving her a subtle, mocking wink.

“Thank you, Harrison,” Marcus said into the microphone, his voice booming through the ballroom. “And thank you to everyone here tonight. Innovation is about taking risks. It’s about letting go of old, outdated methods and embracing the future. Tonight, I am proud to present the blueprint for that future.”

Marcus pressed the clicker in his hand to activate the massive projector screen behind him. He expected his presentation slide to appear.

Instead, the screen went black.

A soft murmur went through the crowd. Marcus frowned, pressing the clicker again. “Ah, it seems we have a slight technical glitch…”

Suddenly, the screen flickered to life.

But it wasn't a marketing presentation.

It was a video.

High-definition, crystal-clear surveillance footage from Clare’s office from two days ago.

The audio kicked in, loud and echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system of the ballroom.

“Listen to me, you bitter bitch,” Marcus’s voice boomed through the room, sounding incredibly harsh and vicious. “You think you’re untouchable because you’re sleeping with the CEO now? If you don't sign that transfer by five o’clock today, I’ll make sure the entire industry sees what kind of woman you really are. One click, and these go to every major client, every board member…”

On the screen, Marcus’s face was twisted in a snarl as he tossed the manila envelope of private photos onto Clare’s desk.

The entire ballroom gasped. A shocking, collective intake of breath rippled through the hundreds of elite guests.

Marcus’s face drained of all color. He froze, his hand trembling on the podium. “Turn it off! Turn it off right now!” he screamed toward the tech booth.

But the video didn't turn off. It transitioned.

The next slide displayed a series of financial ledgers—certified documents showing millions of dollars being transferred from the late Victoria Sterling’s design firm to offshore accounts registered under Marcus Avery’s and Sarah Jenkins’ names.

Beside it, a certified police warrant for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and extortion appeared, with Marcus’s and Sarah’s names highlighted in bright red.

The crowd began to whisper frantically. People were pointing, taking out their phones, recording the massive, public downfall.

“This is a lie! This is a setup!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with sheer panic. He looked at Harrison. “Harrison, do something! Turn it off!”

But Harrison Vance was staring at the screen in horror. Because the next slide appeared.

It was a certified medical document from Saint Jude’s Women’s Clinic, showing Sarah Jenkins’ pregnancy status. Beneath it, a timeline of conception dates, paired side-by-side with Vantage Media’s travel logs.

MIAMI LUXURY RESORT: Harrison Vance & Sarah Jenkins (Room 402) - October 12th-16th. LONDON BUSINESS TRIP: Marcus Avery - October 12th-16th.

ESTIMATED CONCEPTION DATE: October 14th.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Marcus turned slowly to look at Sarah, who was standing in the crowd, her face completely white, her hands shaking.

“You…” Marcus whispered, the microphone catching his voice. “You… and Harrison?”

“Marcus, no! It’s not what it looks like!” Sarah cried, stepping back as the crowd parted around her as if she were infected with a plague.

Before anyone could say another word, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two federal investigators, marched into the room. They walked straight down the center aisle, past the stunned guests, and stepped up to the stage.

“Marcus Avery? Sarah Jenkins?” the lead investigator announced, his voice echoing through the room. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate espionage, extortion, and financial fraud. Please step down and put your hands behind your back.”
