Chapter 14 - The Vance Ultimatum"What destiny?" I demanded, finally stepping forward and slamming the silver key down onto the marble chess table. "My grandfather built this empire with his own hands!"

"Your grandfather was a brilliant thief who needed a backer with deep pockets and loose morals," Viktor corrected calmly, resting his bony hands on the silver handle of his cane. "I provided the capital that bought the first Whitaker shipping docks. In exchange, we had an agreement: a blood pact. The firstborn male heir of the Whitaker line would marry into my inner circle to cement the transnational alliance."

My blood ran cold. The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with horrifying clarity.

"Brielle Cartwright," I whispered. "Her grandfather wasn't just an industrialist... he was your proxy."

"Brilliant," Viktor smiled, his eyes glinting with cold satisfaction. "Arthur Cartwright was my chief operative in North America. The planned marriage between you and Brielle was designed to merge my European holdings with your American empire, creating a global monopoly that would answer to no government on earth."

"And when I broke off the engagement," I said, my voice dropping an octave, "you lost your bridge."

"Not lost," Viktor corrected, leaning forward, the atmosphere in the room dropping ten degrees. "Delayed. But now, you have complicated things immensely, Julian. You walked into a diner, found four little illegitimate bastards, and blew up fifty years of meticulous planning."

"Call them bastards again, and I'll tear this entire building down around you," I snarled, stepping directly over the chess table, the threat vibrating in every muscle of my body.

Viktor didn't flinch. He simply raised a frail hand.

"You can threaten me all you like, Julian. But consider the mathematics. Without my financing, every single Whitaker bank account, real estate trust, and corporate asset will be frozen under federal and international terrorism-financing statutes by midnight tonight. Your precious Tribeca loft? Repossessed. Your accounts in New York? Locked. The food on your sons' plates? Gone."

He paused, letting the crushing weight of his words sink into my chest.

"Or... you sign the transfer papers. You return to New York, fulfill your obligation to marry Brielle—who is quite willing to forgive and forget for a share of the crown—and I leave Mara and your four little boys alone in absolute luxury for the rest of their lives."

"And if I refuse?"

May you like

Viktor smiled, a cold, empty gesture that didn't reach his eyes.

"Then I send a team to the Hamptons tonight. And by morning, your sons will have no parents left to protect them."
