Chapter 17 - The Final Checkmate"Viktor Vance, aka Viktor Vanecek," the lead federal agent announced, his voice echoing through the massive ballroom as he raised a gold shield and pointed directly at the front row. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, racketeering, and corporate extortion under the RICO Act!"

Chaos erupted instantly.
Socialites screamed, champagne flutes shattered against the marble floor, and guests scrambled toward the exits like a panicked herd. Viktor’s bodyguards reached inside their jackets for their sidearms, but before they could draw, federal agents swarmed them, slamming them onto the floor in a flurry of tactical precision.
Viktor Vance stood frozen in place, his face turning pale with absolute fury as he locked eyes with me.
"You absolute fool," Viktor spat, his voice trembling with rage as cuffs were slapped onto his wrists. "Without my signature, your entire empire collapses by midnight! You've ruined yourself!"
"My empire was never money, Viktor," I said, stepping down from the altar and walking slowly toward him, my voice cold and steady. "It was never about the stocks or the real estate. My grandfather made a deal with the devil, but I just cancelled the subscription."
I pulled a folded document out of my tuxedo pocket and tossed it onto the floor at his feet.
"What is that?" Viktor hissed.
"That," I smiled, "is a federal whistleblower immunity agreement signed by my grandfather’s original Swiss bank manager, who turned state’s evidence three days ago. Every offshore account, every shell corporation, and every penny of your syndicate has been seized by the international court. You’re broke, Viktor. And you're going to die in a federal cage."
Viktor let out a bitter, choked laugh as the agents hauled him away toward the exit, his legacy evaporating before his very eyes.
Brielle Cartwright burst into tears, ripping off her veil and storming out of the ballroom followed by her disgraced father.
Within minutes, the grand ballroom was completely empty, save for the federal agents, Mara, and me.
I turned around. Mara was standing near the entrance, her arms crossed over her chest, watching me with a mixture of awe, exhaustion, and deep, enduring love.
I walked across the empty marble floor until I stood right in front of her.
"You lied to me," she whispered, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "You let me walk out of the loft. You let me think you were choosing them over us."
"I had to," I murmured, reaching out to cup her cheek with my hand, my thumb gently brushing away a stray tear. "Viktor had eyes everywhere, Mara. If he had known we were working with federal intelligence to take him down from the inside, he would have targeted you and the boys. I couldn't risk your lives. Not for a billion dollars. Not for anything."

Mara looked up at me, her expression softening completely as she leaned into my palm. "You're an impossible, reckless idiot, Julian Whitaker."
"Guilty as charged," I smiled, pulling her into my arms and pressing my lips against hers in a long, deep, desperate kiss that washed away years of pain, fear, and shadows.
