Chapter 8 - THE NEW EMPIRESix months later.

The Chicago skyline sparkled under the warm summer sun. The front-page headlines of every major financial magazine in the country carried the same striking photograph: "MARA STERLING RECLAIMS VAUGHN MERIDIAN: THE YOUNGEST FORENSIC CEO IN HISTORY."

Andrew Vaughn was sentenced to twenty-five years in a federal maximum-security prison for grand financial fraud, conspiracy to commit extortion, and attempt at kidnapping. Victoria Hale received fifteen years for her role as an accomplice and corporate espionage. Evelyn Vaughn was placed under house arrest and stripped of all family assets.

Vaughn Meridian was officially renamed Sterling Global Solutions. Under my leadership, and with Ethan’s unbelievable analytical talent, the company cleared all remaining debt and became one of the most successful, ethical, and groundbreaking tech-finance firms in the world.

On a bright Tuesday morning, I sat in the executive office on the top floor—the very room Andrew had once ruled with an iron fist.

The glass doors opened, and Ethan walked in, dressed in a sharp little navy blazer. He was carrying a small silver tray.

“Good morning, CEO Mom,” Ethan smiled, setting the tray down on my executive desk.

On the tray was a glass bowl filled with fresh, bright blueberries.

I chuckled, looking at my brilliant, beautiful boy. “How many are in the bowl today, Ethan?”

Ethan looked at the bowl for a fraction of a second, his sharp eyes scanning the fruit instantly.

“Exactly 300, Mom,” Ethan replied with a proud grin. “And not a single one was dropped.”

I pulled my son into a tight, warm hug, kissing the top of his head as we looked out the massive glass windows overlooking the city of Chicago.

Andrew had tried to buy my silence for $250 million. He had tried to break my spirit and throw away our son like garbage. But in his blind arrogance and endless greed, he had destroyed his own life, losing every dollar, every shred of respect, and his freedom forever.

Because he had forgotten the most important rule of all:

Never underestimate a mother protecting her child. And never, ever assume the boy counting fruit isn't preparing to take down an empire.
