Chapter 7 - The Enemy at the ThresholdDownstairs in the subterranean billiards room, the atmosphere was thick with cigar smoke and brewing mutiny.

Marcus Vance and Sal Marcone sat across from Victor, their faces grim in the amber lamplight.
"The word is out across the entire Syndicate, Victor," Vance warned, swirling his scotch. "Every capo from the loop to the docks knows about your promise. Half your empire to the person who makes the boy speak. You’ve put a massive target on Castellano Manor."
"Let them try," Victor said coldly, cleaning the slide of his Sig Sauer with an oily rag. "Anyone foolish enough to cross my gates to claim a prize they haven't earned will leave in a body bag."
"And the new maid?" Marcone grunted, leaning forward. "Rocco’s men are still howling about you liquidating their loan shark operation over a forty-grand debt she owed. They think you're losing your edge over a domestic."
Victor snapped the slide of his pistol back into place with a crisp, metallic clack. He looked up, his eyes flashing with lethal intent.

"Tell Rocco if any of his men come within five miles of my property again, I won't just burn their warehouses—I'll feed them to the fish in Lake Michigan." Victor stood up, towering over the two capos. "Iris Day stays. And anyone who touches her answers to me."
As Victor walked out of the billiards room and headed toward the silent east wing, he didn't know that miles away in the blinding snowstorm, a convoy of black SUVs bearing the crest of the rival Moretti family was already turning onto the private access road, carrying men who smelled blood in the water.
