Chapter 6 - The Ticking ClockThe red digital numbers bled against the dark wood of the open safe: 00:01:58... 00:01:57...

The two federal agents accompanying Clara immediately drew their weapons, scanning the shadows of the expansive, book-lined study.
"Step back, ma'am! Right now!" one of the agents barked, grabbing Clara by the shoulder and forcibly pulling her backward toward the hallway. "Bomb squad! We need an immediate evacuation of the east wing!"
"Wait!" Clara cried out, planting her feet against the polished hardwood floor despite the agent's grip. She squinted through the dim light at the interior of the safe. "Look at the back wall of the safe! The physical ledger—it’s still there!"
Sure enough, tucked behind the explosive device in a specialized magnetic compartment was a thick, leather-bound book stamped with gold foil: Sterling-Vance Master Trust & Override Codes.
"It doesn't matter what's in there, ma'am! If we trigger that mechanism or fail to disarm it in under two minutes, this entire wing—and everyone in the main ballroom—goes up in smoke!" the agent shouted into his shoulder radio. "All units, code black in the east wing! Evacuate the gala immediately!"
Clara’s mind raced. In the ballroom, Leo was down there. Eleanor was down there. Elijah was down there. If the east wing exploded, the structural integrity of the entire historic mansion would collapse right onto the main hall.
"Give me your tactical knife," Clara demanded, her voice suddenly carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority that shocked the trained federal operative.
"Are you insane? I'm getting you out of here!"
"If you pull me out of here without those override codes, the Syndicate wins, and every single person we love dies anyway!" Clara snapped, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "Jonathan talked about this safe in his sleep. He said the explosive trap was wired to a secondary sensor. If you pull the ledger without cutting the correct bypass wire first, it detonates instantly."
The agent hesitated, his hand hovering over his radio. He looked at Clara’s fierce, unwavering gaze, then made a split-second, career-defining decision. He unclipped his multi-tool knife, flicked open the wire-cutter blade, and handed it to her.
"You have sixty seconds," the agent said tightly, positioning his ballistic shield in front of them both.
Clara stepped forward, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knelt in front of the open safe, the sterile scent of ozone and dust filling her nose.
The digital timer hissed silently: 00:00:45... 00:00:44...
She remembered the blueprints of the estate she had once found discarded in the recycling bin. She remembered Jonathan’s arrogant late-night phone calls where he bragged about his security systems.
“Blue cuts the power, red cuts the trigger,” Jonathan’s voice echoed in her memory.
Inside the small control panel beneath the explosive charge, there were three wires: blue, red, and striped yellow-and-black.
"Wait," Clara whispered, her hands hovering millimeters away from the live wires. "Jonathan was arrogant, but he was paranoid. He never played fair."
00:00:25... 00:00:24...
"Ma'am, we have to go! Now!" the agent yelled, gripping her jacket.
"If I cut red, it detonates," Clara muttered, her eyes tracking the circuit board. "The striped wire... it’s a dummy. The blue wire goes to the main power, but the override... the true bypass is the secondary red wire looped underneath."
With a steady, microscopic breath, Clara slid the blade forward.
00:00:10... 00:00:09... 00:00:08...
She snipped the loop.
The red digital screen blinked violently once... twice... and then went completely dark.
Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the sound of Clara’s heavy, ragged breathing and the cold sweat dripping down her forehead.

Without wasting a single millisecond, Clara reached deep into the magnetic compartment, ripped the leather-bound master ledger free, and clutched it tightly to her chest.
"Got it," she gasped, looking up at the stunned federal agent. "Let’s go save the family."
