Chapter 1 - THE FALL OF THE MASKThe crystal chandelier overhead seemed to hum with the collective shock of five hundred of the city’s elite. Whispers instantly rippled through the grand ballroom like wildfire through dry brush. Evelyn stood her ground, her breathing controlled, her eyes locked onto Julian as he clutched his chest, gasping for air against a gilded pillar.

"Call an ambulance! Someone call an ambulance!" Eleanor shrieked, dropping her champagne flute. The delicate glass shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the tense silence.
Julian fell to his knees, his face turning an alarming shade of pale gray. His expensive tailored tuxedo suddenly looked like a straitjacket as he fought for every breath. "She... she poisoned me..." he choked out, pointing a trembling finger directly at Evelyn. "The... the witch..."
"Don't flatter yourself, Julian," Evelyn said coldly, her voice cutting through the panic with the precision of a scalpel. She gently pulled six-year-old Lily further behind her, shielding the terrified child from the chaos. "If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't be gasping for air. You’d already be six feet under."
Security guards in black suits finally surged forward, parting the stunned crowd. But before they could grab Evelyn, a deep, resonant voice boomed from the grand staircase overlooking the ballroom.
"Stop right there."
Every head turned toward the staircase. Standing at the landing was none other than Arthur Vance—the reclusive billionaire patriarch of the Vance shipping empire, and Julian’s primary financial backer. His silver hair caught the light, and his cold, calculating eyes swept over the scene below.

"Arthur," Eleanor gasped, her voice trembling as she hurried toward the stairs. "Thank God you're here. This... this madwoman and her brat have ruined your charity gala. Julian is dying!"
Arthur didn't even look at Eleanor. His gaze remained fixed entirely on Evelyn. And more specifically, on the silver pendant resting against her collarbone—a pendant that made the blood drain entirely from his face.
