Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW RETURNSThree weeks later.

Sarah and Emma had moved into a stunning, sunlit townhouse in the exclusive Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. The rooms were filled with fresh flowers, sunlight, and the sound of Emma’s joyous laughter as she played in her new bedroom—a room painted soft pink, complete with a massive dollhouse and bookshelves stacked with fairy tales.
David had become a daily presence in their lives. He wasn't just a benefactor anymore; he was a protector, a friend, and—though neither dared to say the word aloud yet—something much deeper.
One afternoon, Sarah was standing on the front porch, watching Emma play jump rope on the paved walkway, when a battered silver sedan pulled up sharply to the curb.
The driver's door swung open.
A tall man with unkempt hair, a greasy leather jacket, and bloodshot eyes stepped out.
Sarah’s blood ran completely cold.
It was Marcus Miller—Emma’s biological father, who had vanished six years ago without a trace, leaving behind drug debts, broken promises, and court orders he had cheerfully ignored.
Marcus slammed the car door shut and stalked up the walkway, his eyes wide and erratic.
"Well, well, well," Marcus sneered, looking at the luxury townhouse, the manicured lawn, and Sarah’s clean clothes. "Look at you living in high cotton! You told me you were broke, Sarah! You told me you couldn't even pay for baby formula!"
Sarah stepped off the porch, putting herself between Marcus and the front door where Emma was playing. "What do you want, Marcus? You lost all rights to Emma years ago."
"Rights?" Marcus laughed harshly, stepping closer. "That’s my kid in there! And I heard through the grapevine that your new boyfriend is a billionaire tech mogul named David Vance! Which means there’s a whole lot of cash floating around this house—and as her legal father, I want my cut!"
Before Sarah could answer, the front door swung open behind her.
David stepped out onto the porch. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't look panicked. He simply descended the steps, his tall, commanding presence instantly blotting out the sunlight.
"You have five seconds to turn around, get back in your trash heap of a car, and drive away," David said, his voice cold enough to freeze boiling water. "Or I will personally ensure that every federal agency, tax auditor, and loan shark you owe money to descends upon you simultaneously."
Marcus scoffed, puffing out his chest. "Oh, yeah? And who the hell are you—"
David didn't wait. He snapped his fingers.
From around the corner of the street, two black security SUVs pulled up instantly, doors flying open as four burly private security guards stepped out, their tactical gear and calm, menacing professionalism making it abundantly clear that Marcus was completely outmatched.
Marcus paled instantly. He looked from David’s icy glare to the towering guards.
"This isn't over!" Marcus spat, backing away toward his car. "I'll take you to court! I'll sue for custody! You can't hide a kid from her real father!"
May you like
"Try it," David replied softly. "My legal team is already waiting for your first motion."
Marcus scrambled into his car, tires screeching as he sped down the street, disappearing around the corner in a cloud of exhaust.
