CHAPTER 2: The Cold Ashes of Deceit — The Secret of the Burning Car

Robert’s protective instincts, honed by years of ruthless corporate warfare, kicked in instantly. He rushed to the door, peering through the crack. Three men in dark tactical gear, their faces obscured by ballistic masks, were moving swiftly up the stairs, silencers attached to their pistols.

"We have to go. Now!" Robert whispered, turning back to Catherine. He scooped Emma into his arms, while Catherine grabbed her worn coat and the small box containing her ring.

"The fire escape," Catherine hissed, pointing toward a rusted window at the back of the room.

Robert didn't hesitate. He kicked the window frame, shattering the rotten wood and rust-welded lock. He climbed out into the freezing downpour first, holding Emma tightly against his chest, shielding her from the rain with his body. Catherine scrambled out behind him just as the apartment door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.

Suppressed gunshots sputtered through the darkness, sparks flying off the iron fire escape railing mere inches from Robert’s head.

"Down! Go, go!" Robert roared over the sound of the rain.

They scrambled down the slick metal stairs. Below them, in the alleyway, Arthur had already pulled the massive Rolls-Royce around. The headlights pierced the gloom.

"Get in!" Arthur yelled, throwing the rear doors open.

They piled into the back seat, tumbling onto the leather floor just as a bullet shattered the rear windshield of the car. Fortunately, the glass was reinforced ballistic armor; it spiderwebbed but held. Arthur slammed the car into reverse, crushing a trash bin, then spun the steering wheel, roaring out of the alley and onto the main avenue.

Inside the quiet, armored sanctuary of the car, Emma finally woke up, crying and clinging to Catherine. Catherine held her tight, rocking her, whispering soothing words that sounded more like a prayer.

Robert looked at his wife—the woman he had buried in an empty casket. "Catherine. Talk to me. Who is trying to kill you? Why did you fake your death?"

Catherine looked up, her face pale, tears cutting clean tracks through the grime on her cheeks. She took a deep breath, her gaze falling on Robert’s identical ring.

"Five years ago, before the crash, I discovered a massive financial leak in Stellar Retreats," Catherine began, her voice shaking. "Over three hundred million dollars had been siphoned through shell companies in Macau and Switzerland. I thought it was an external hack, so I hired a private investigator to trace the accounts. Two days later, the investigator was found dead in his apartment. Supposed suicide."

Robert’s brow furrowed. "I never saw any reports of a leak. Our CFO at the time—"

"Our CFO was murdered too, Robert, remember? A 'sudden heart attack' just a week after my car crash," Catherine said bitterly. "I realized the leak was coming from the inside. From someone with absolute administrative access. Someone who had the power to bypass both of our security protocols."

"There are only three people in the world with that level of access," Robert said, his blood turning to ice. "Me, you... and James."

"Your twin brother," Catherine whispered.

"But James is dead!" Robert insisted, his voice rising in disbelief. "He drowned twenty-five years ago when our family yacht sank off the coast of Maine! They never found his body, but the coast guard—"

"They never found his body because he didn't drown, Robert," Catherine interrupted, her hazel eyes piercing his. "James survived. He took a different name. He built a shadow syndicate using our company’s resources. When I found out, he threatened to kill Emma—who was only three at the time. He told me if I didn't disappear, he would make sure both of us died in a way that looked like an accident."

She looked down at her hands. "So, I made a deal with him. I staged the car crash. He provided the body of a deceased woman from a local morgue, dressed her in my clothes, and slipped a replica of my ring onto her finger. He wanted you to believe I was dead so you would be broken, distracted, and easy to manipulate. And it worked. For five years, he has been slowly bleeding Stellar Retreats dry, using you as his shield."

Robert sat in stunned silence. The empire he had built, the grief that had consumed him, the very fabric of his reality—it was all a beautifully orchestrated lie.

Suddenly, a bright red laser dot appeared on Catherine’s chest.

Robert’s heart stopped. He looked out the window. A black SUV was pulling up alongside them, a passenger leaning out of the window with a high-caliber rifle.

"Arthur, evasive maneuvers!" Robert screamed.

But before Arthur could react, the SUV rammed their side, sending the heavy luxury car spinning out of control across the slick asphalt.
