Chapter 1 - THE BLOOD IN THE SHADOWSThe desert air turned to pure ice.

"Twins," Grace repeated, her body shaking so violently that her knees scraped against the cracked concrete of the porch. "It was twins, Colonel. A boy... and a girl."

My vision blurred. I reached out to grab the rusted fence post just to keep from collapsing. Eight years. Eight years of wearing this uniform, taking orders, bleeding for a country I swore to protect—while under my own roof, my mother was running a syndicate of lies.

"Where is she, Grace?" My voice wasn't the voice of a decorated Lieutenant Colonel anymore. It was the primal roar of a father who had been gutted alive. "Where is my daughter?!"

"I... I don't know!" Grace sobbed, pressing her hands against her face. "When the labor started eight years ago, your mother had locked Emily in a private clinic in Denver—away from the base, away from any official records. I was just the hired help, meant to clean up. When the babies were born, Emily was bleeding out. Mrs. Knight didn't even call for an ambulance. She watched Emily die!"

"You lied!" I screamed, stepping toward her. "You watched my wife die?!"

"She threatened to kill my family!" Grace shrieked, cowering. "She said if I didn't take the boy and disappear, she'd make sure my brother went to prison for life on fabricated charges. I took Oliver because Mrs. Knight told her bodyguard to... to dispose of him. I stole the baby out of the back door while they were distracted by the girl!"

"They kept the girl?" I gasped, the air leaving my lungs.

Rose Parker walked up to me, her eyes dead and cold. She reached out and struck me hard across the face. The slap echoed across the dusty, quiet yard.

"She didn't keep her to love her, Ethan," Rose hissed, her voice trembling with hatred. "Victoria Knight doesn't love anything that doesn't have a price tag. Your mother took your daughter back to the Knight estate. She raised her in secret. And do you know why? Because three months ago, your wealthy, noble family applied for a massive trust fund payout that requires a direct female heir."

The blood in my veins turned to liquid fire.

My mind raced back to my home back in Virginia—the sprawling, gated estate where my mother lived like a queen. The mansion had a east wing that had been locked off for as long as I could remember. Victoria had always told me it was "under renovation" or used for "archival storage."

I turned around and looked at Oliver. The little boy was peeking out from behind the doorframe, his wide, dark eyes locked on mine. He didn't see a father. He saw a monster in a camouflage uniform—the same uniform the men who harassed his grandmother wore.

"Oliver," I whispered, dropping to one knee in the dirt. I unclipped the Silver Star medal from my chest and laid it gently on the top stair. "I am going to fix this. I swear on my life, I will bring your sister home."

Without waiting another second, I turned on my heel, strode back to my military SUV, and slammed the door. As I fired up the engine, my phone rang on the dashboard.

The caller ID displayed a name that sent a chill straight down my spine: VICTORIA KNIGHT.

I hit speakerphone. "Speak."

"Ethan, darling," my mother’s voice came through, smooth as silk and dripping with artificial warmth. "Where on earth are you? The Senator's dinner starts in two hours, and you haven't even put on your dress whites. You know how important appearances are for your promotion to Colonel."

I squeezed the steering wheel so hard my knuckles popped through my skin.

"I'm in Miller's Crossing, Mother," I said, my tone deadly quiet. "And I just met Oliver."

Silence stretched over the line. For five agonizing seconds, there was no breath, no sound.

Then, Victoria’s voice changed. The motherly warmth evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating hiss.

"You should have stayed on the base, Ethan," she whispered softly. "Turn your car around now. Because if you drive back to the estate... you won't like what's waiting for you."

The call disconnected. I slammed my foot on the accelerator, sending rocks and dirt flying into the desert wind.
