Chapter 8 - Unraveling the ArmorBy 3:00 AM, the mansion on the northern edge of Chicago was completely silent.

The grand estate stood like a fortress against the storm, its limestone exterior glowing under the security lights. But inside Dominic’s private study, the atmosphere was thick with a tension entirely different from the usual corporate coldness.
Emma sat in a plush velvet armchair near the grand stone fireplace. A warm mug of tea rested between her hands, though she hadn't taken a sip. Standing beside her, Dominic held a small medical kit, carefully dabbing antiseptic onto the bruised cut on her cheekbone.
He moved with an unexpected tenderness, his hands—usually steady only when holding a weapon—gentle against her skin.
"You're a fool, Emma Carter," Dominic said quietly, breaking the heavy silence. "Risking your life for a diner that doesn't even belong to you."
Emma looked up, her dark eyes flashing with sudden defiance, though her voice was softer now. "And you’re a hypocrite, Dominic Vale. You spend millions building walls to keep the world out, yet you walk right into a shootout to save a maid."
Dominic paused, the antiseptic pad hovering inches from her face. He didn't look away.
"I built those walls because I was terrified of what was inside them," Dominic confessed, the words tasting foreign, bitter, yet liberating on his tongue. "For thirty-eight years, I believed power meant control. I believed kindness was a liability. But watching you... watching a woman with everything to lose give away every dollar she had just to keep a family from starving... it broke something in me, Emma."
He set the medical kit down on the coffee table and knelt on one knee before her chair, looking up into her face.
"Your father died because of my family's sins," Dominic continued, his voice thick with a raw, agonizing sincerity. "I can't undo the past. But I can change the future. Bea’s Diner is safe. Marcone will never touch it again—I bought the entire block tonight, and the deeds are being transferred to Bea’s name as we speak."
Emma’s jaw dropped. Tears welled in her eyes, spilling over her lashes, but this time, they weren't tears of fear or grief. They were tears of profound, shattering relief.
"You... you bought the block?" she whispered.
"I did," Dominic said softly, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "And as for you... you don't ever have to clean another floor in this estate again. Unless, of course, you want to stay."
Emma stared down at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. The billionaire crime lord, the most feared man in Chicago, was kneeling before her, his armor completely stripped away.

She slowly reached out, placing her warm, steady hand over his.
"I don't want to be a maid anymore, Dominic," she whispered, a small, genuine smile breaking through her bruised face. "But I think... I might want to stay."
