Chapter 7 - THE GRAND ENTRANCEDownstairs, the applause rolled in like thunder as Miranda Vail stepped up to the podium.

She wore a breathtaking silver evening gown that shimmered under the spotlights. Her hair was immaculate; her smile was radiant, projecting the image of a grieving, courageous mother soldiering on through unimaginable pain.

"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen," Miranda began, her voice carrying across the silent, adoring crowd. "As many of you know, these past few days have been the darkest of my life. My sweet Leah is still out there, lost in the cold, and my heart breaks with every passing hour—"

Click.

Miranda pressed the remote to advance her introductory slide, expecting a portrait of her missing daughter surrounded by angel wings.

Instead, the massive projector screen behind her flashed violently.

The soft romantic music cut out.

Across the giant display, bold red letters blazed in high-definition:

VAIL ASSURANCE: INTERNAL FRAUD & DIRECTIVE 409 “How We Calculated the Price of Human Lives for Corporate Profit.”

The ballroom went dead, suffocatingly silent.

Miranda spun around, her face instantly draining of all color, the silver makeup unable to hide the sudden, stark terror in her eyes.

Before she could speak, thousands of internal memos, audio logs, and financial spreadsheets began scrolling automatically across the screen.

And right at the top, highlighted in bold yellow, was the official medical denial file for Emily Reed—signed digitally by Miranda Vail herself, with a note attached: “Deny claim. Maximize quarterly dividend return.”

The crowd gasped. Reporters in the back rows scrambled for their cameras. Phones flashed like lightning storms.

Miranda gripped the edges of the podium so hard her knuckles turned ghostly white, her eyes darting frantically toward the doors. "This is a cyberattack! Cut the feed! Cut the feed right now!"

"There is no cut-off, Miranda," a calm, deep voice echoed through the ballroom sound system.

All heads whipped toward the mezzanine balcony above the stage.

Standing in the spotlight at the edge of the balcony was Nolan Reed. Beside him stood Jamie, and standing proudly in the center, removing her wide-brimmed hat, was Leah Vail.

The silence in the room shattered completely.
