Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING"Leah!" Miranda screamed, her polished mask completely shattering into a frantic, hysterical shriek. She abandoned the podium, running toward the stairs leading to the balcony. "Leah, baby! Don't listen to them! They kidnapped you! They brainwashed you!"

"Stay away from her, Miranda," Nolan commanded, his voice ringing out across the grand hall with an authority that stopped the billionaire dead in her tracks.
The double doors of the ballroom flew open.
Federal agents from the Department of Justice, accompanied by state investigators and armed marshals, swarmed into the room, their badges flashing under the crystal chandeliers.
The lead agent walked straight past the stunned crowd, heading directly toward the stage, then up the stairs to the mezzanine.
He stopped in front of Miranda Vail, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Miranda Vail," the agent announced loudly, his voice broadcasting across the live microphones. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, securities manipulation, obstruction of justice, and criminal negligence resulting in wrongful death."
"You can't do this!" Miranda shrieked, thrashing as the cuffs snapped onto her wrists. "I am the CEO of Vail Assurance! I own half this city! Do you know who I am?!"
"We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Vail," the agent replied coldly, turning her around and marching her down the stairs past hundreds of staring, horrified investors and journalists.

As Miranda was dragged out of the ballroom in handcuffs, her expensive silver dress rustling against the carpet, she locked eyes with Nolan Reed one last time.
In that single, devastating look, she realized that all her wealth, all her power, and all her corporate walls had been utterly dismantled not by a rival CEO, not by federal prosecutors, but by a grieving janitor and a brave little girl who simply refused to stay silent.
