CHAPTER 2 — The Detective's Envelope Changed Everything

The sound of breaking crystal echoed through the Ashford mansion.
No one moved.
Hundreds of glittering shards lay scattered across the polished marble floor while deep red wine spread between them like fresh blood.
Aurora couldn't breathe.
Julian stood frozen beside her, still trying to process Adrian's poisonous accusation.
Then the butler spoke again.
"Mr. Ashford... Detective Daniel Mercer insists he cannot wait."
The enormous dining room fell into complete silence.
Eleanor Ashford frowned.
"This is a private family dinner."
"I'm afraid," the butler answered carefully, "he says this concerns Mrs. Aurora Ashford directly."
Julian immediately nodded.
"Bring him in."
Adrian leaned comfortably against his chair, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
He looked almost...
Excited.
Aurora noticed.
He wasn't nervous.
He wasn't surprised.
He looked like a man waiting for the final piece of a carefully arranged performance.
Thirty seconds later, Detective Daniel Mercer entered the dining room wearing a dark navy suit beneath a rain-soaked overcoat.
He carried a thick brown evidence envelope.
His expression was professional.
But serious.
"Mr. Julian Ashford?"
Julian stepped forward.
"I'm Detective Mercer with the Manhattan Special Victims Unit."
"I'm sorry to interrupt your evening."
"This couldn't wait."
His eyes shifted toward Aurora.
"Mrs. Ashford..."
"I need to ask you several questions regarding an incident that occurred at the Grand Wellington Hotel twenty-four nights ago."
Aurora's heart stopped.
Julian slowly turned toward her.
"The hotel?"
She couldn't answer.
Detective Mercer placed the envelope on the dining table.
"We're investigating multiple reports involving unauthorized access to luxury hotel suites."
Eleanor crossed her arms.
"What does that have to do with my daughter-in-law?"
Mercer carefully removed several photographs.
"One guest reported that security footage from an entire hallway disappeared for approximately ninety-seven minutes."
Another photograph.
"The electronic lock records were manually altered."
Another.
"The hotel's backup server was remotely accessed."
Julian frowned.
"This sounds like corporate espionage."
"It could be."
Mercer nodded.
"But one room appears to have been the primary target."
He slid the final photograph across the table.
Suite 2708.
Aurora's suite.
Every muscle in her body tightened.
Julian looked confused.
"You stayed there before our wedding."
"Yes..."
Aurora whispered.
Mercer continued.
"The hotel's internal investigation uncovered evidence suggesting someone deliberately erased security footage involving this room."
Julian looked from the detective to Aurora.
"Why?"
Aurora opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she didn't know.
She had spent the last three weeks believing that terrible night belonged only to her.
Apparently...
Someone else had been hiding it too.
Adrian casually picked up his wine.
"What exactly are you suggesting, Detective?"
Mercer looked directly at him.
"I'm not suggesting anything."
"I'm asking questions."
Adrian smiled.
"Dangerous habit."
Mercer ignored him.
"Mrs. Ashford..."
"Do you remember who visited your suite that evening?"
Aurora's fingers curled beneath the table.
She remembered every second.
Every knock.
Every word.
Every mistake.
But speaking Adrian's name now would explode the family.
Julian deserved the truth.
Yet somehow...
Not like this.
"I..."
She hesitated.
"I don't remember."
Adrian quietly laughed.
Mercer noticed.
"So you suffered memory loss?"
"No."
"I was under tremendous stress."
Julian finally stepped beside his wife.
"Detective, if this investigation concerns my wife as a victim, then I'll cooperate."
"If you're here to humiliate her during dinner, we're finished."
Mercer's face softened.
"I actually hope Mrs. Ashford is a victim."
Those words froze everyone.
Even Adrian stopped smiling.
Mercer reached back into the envelope.
"This was recovered yesterday."
He removed a small silver hotel keycard sealed inside an evidence bag.
Aurora stared at it.
Recognition hit instantly.
Room 2708.
Her room.
"The fingerprints belong to three people."
Mercer spoke slowly.
"Mrs. Aurora Ashford."
"The hotel manager."
"And one unidentified male."
Julian immediately asked,
"Can you identify him through DNA?"
Mercer nodded once.
"If we obtain a court order."
Adrian's fingers tightened around his glass for the first time all evening.
Barely noticeable.
But Aurora saw it.
So did Mercer.
Dinner was forgotten.
Nobody touched the expensive food.
The detective continued.
"There is one more issue."
He removed another sealed envelope.
"This arrived anonymously at our office yesterday morning."
"No return address."
"No fingerprints."
Julian accepted it.
Inside...
There was only one photograph.
Aurora sleeping.
Still wearing the white silk robe she had packed before her wedding.
She was lying on the hotel bed.
Completely unconscious.
Julian's face drained of color.
"What..."
His voice cracked.
"...what is this?"
Aurora grabbed the photograph.
She had never seen it before.
She didn't even remember falling asleep.
Then she noticed something else.
A digital clock beside the bed.
2:17 a.m.
She clearly remembered looking at the clock after Adrian left.
It had been only 11:40 p.m.
Nearly three hours...
Were missing.
Her hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No..."
Julian gently held her shoulders.
"Aurora..."
She looked into his eyes.
Pure trust.
Pure love.
He still believed her.
That made everything hurt even more.
Detective Mercer lowered his voice.
"Our forensic team believes the photograph was taken by someone inside the room."
Eleanor looked horrified.
"You mean someone remained there while she slept?"
Mercer nodded.
"Possibly."
"Or entered after she lost consciousness."
Julian's expression darkened.
"Lost consciousness?"
Mercer met his eyes.
"We found traces of an uncommon sedative in a wine glass recovered from hotel storage."
"The same sedative has been linked to three unsolved assault investigations involving wealthy families."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Aurora suddenly remembered something.
The champagne.
Adrian had insisted on opening a bottle.
She only drank one glass.
After that...
Everything blurred.
Laughter.
Music.
Darkness.
Then...
Morning.
She had blamed herself for not remembering.
She had convinced herself that guilt was punishment enough.
But now...
Another possibility crashed into her.
What if she hadn't forgotten...
What if someone had made her forget?
Julian slowly turned toward his younger brother.
"Adrian."
The room seemed to shrink.
Adrian looked almost amused.
"What?"
"You knew she stayed alone that night."
"So?"
"You were the only family member in New York."
"And?"
Julian stepped closer.
"Were you in that hotel?"
Adrian smiled.
"I visit hundreds of hotels."
"Be specific."
"Were."
"You."
"There."
For the first time...
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He looked directly at Aurora.
Then quietly said,
"Careful, brother."
"You may not enjoy the truth as much as you think."
Before Julian could respond—
Detective Mercer's phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed instantly.
"What?"
"Are you absolutely certain?"
The detective slowly lowered the phone.
Then looked at everyone around the table.
Finally...
His eyes stopped on Aurora.
"The preliminary DNA analysis from the unidentified fingerprints just came back."
He swallowed.
"There is a match."
Julian's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Whose fingerprints are they?"
Mercer answered.
May you like
"...They belong to someone this family believed died twelve years ago."
