CHAPTER 3 — The Dead Man's Fingerprints

No one spoke.

Even the grandfather clock in the Ashford dining room seemed impossibly loud.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Detective Daniel Mercer held the forensic report in his hand, reading it again as if hoping the words would somehow change.

Julian's voice finally broke the silence.

"...Who?"

Mercer looked up.

"The fingerprint belongs to Dr. Nathaniel Ashford."

The room exploded.

"That's impossible!" Eleanor shouted, rising so quickly her chair crashed backward.

"He died twelve years ago."

"I attended his funeral."

"I buried my husband."

Mercer remained calm.

"According to the federal biometric database..."

He placed the report on the table.

"...these prints are an exact match."

Aurora stared at the paper without seeing it.

Nathaniel Ashford.

Julian's father.

Adrian's father.

One of the most celebrated cardiac surgeons in American history.

Officially dead for over a decade.

Julian shook his head.

"No."

"My father died in a helicopter crash outside Denver."

"The investigation was closed."

"The body was identified."

Mercer answered quietly.

"The investigation may not have been as complete as everyone believed."

Across the table...

Adrian slowly smiled.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

Aurora noticed it immediately.

He wasn't shocked.

He looked like a man hearing an old secret spoken aloud.

Julian noticed too.

"You knew."

Adrian looked at him.

"Knew what?"

"You aren't surprised."

Adrian casually lifted his wine.

"After twelve years, surprises become exhausting."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian only shrugged.

"Maybe Dad was better at disappearing than everyone thought."

The words landed like a bomb.

Eleanor slapped the table.

"Enough!"

Her voice echoed through the mansion.

"Your father is dead."

"He was an honorable man."

"I will not tolerate this disgusting conversation."

Mercer calmly opened another folder.

"Mrs. Ashford..."

"I'm afraid there is more."

He slid three enlarged photographs across the dining table.

The first showed the Grand Wellington Hotel hallway.

The timestamp read 10:41 p.m.

Aurora stood outside Suite 2708.

She had just returned from dinner.

The second photograph froze everyone's breathing.

A tall man wearing a black overcoat and baseball cap entered the hallway exactly four minutes later.

His face was hidden.

But one detail remained visible.

His right hand.

There was an unmistakable surgical scar running across the thumb.

Julian leaned closer.

"My father had that scar."

Mercer nodded.

"Hospital records confirm Dr. Nathaniel Ashford received that injury during emergency surgery in 1998."

The third image was worse.

Far worse.

The unknown man unlocked Aurora's hotel room.

At 10:46 p.m.

Using a master access card.

Aurora felt sick.

She had believed Adrian was the only visitor that night.

Now someone else had entered.

Someone whose identity should have been impossible.

Julian slowly turned toward Adrian.

"When did you know?"

Adrian sighed.

"I knew the day they buried an empty coffin."

Silence.

Every eye in the room fixed on him.

Eleanor's face lost all color.

"What... did you just say?"

Adrian leaned back.

"You heard me."

"There was almost nothing left after the helicopter crash."

"Nobody opened the casket."

"They simply trusted the paperwork."

Julian stared in disbelief.

"You've lost your mind."

"Have I?"

Adrian pulled his phone from his pocket.

He unlocked it.

Opened an old photograph.

Then slid it across the table.

"This was taken eight months ago."

Julian picked it up.

Aurora looked over his shoulder.

The picture showed Adrian entering a private airport hangar.

Standing beside him...

Was an older man with silver hair.

The resemblance was undeniable.

The same sharp jaw.

The same eyes.

The same scar on his hand.

Nathaniel Ashford.

Alive.

Julian nearly dropped the phone.

"When?"

His voice cracked.

"Where?"

Adrian answered quietly.

"Geneva."

"He contacted me first."

"He said I could never tell you."

Eleanor staggered backward until she caught herself against the fireplace.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My husband..."

"No..."

"He wouldn't..."

Adrian interrupted softly.

"He said staying dead kept the family safe."

Julian exploded.

"Safe from who?"

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"For the first time in your life..."

"You should ask what Father actually built."

Detective Mercer finally spoke.

"Our investigation isn't only about the hotel."

"It began after three financial crimes connected to Ashford Medical."

Julian frowned.

"My company passed every federal audit."

"I'm not talking about the company."

Mercer looked directly at him.

"I'm talking about Project Genesis."

The room froze.

Aurora had never heard that name before.

Neither had Eleanor.

But Adrian had.

His expression hardened instantly.

Mercer noticed.

"So you recognize it."

Adrian remained silent.

Mercer continued.

"Project Genesis officially never existed."

"But over the last fifteen years..."

"...someone has spent nearly four hundred million dollars hiding every document connected to it."

Julian whispered,

"My father was head of research."

Mercer nodded.

"He was."

"And every person connected to Genesis has either disappeared..."

"...or died."

Aurora suddenly felt something pressing against her leg beneath the dining table.

She looked down.

A folded piece of paper had been tucked under her chair.

She was certain it hadn't been there earlier.

Her pulse quickened.

Without drawing attention, she slipped it into her lap.

The others remained focused on Mercer.

Carefully...

She unfolded it.

Only one sentence had been written in neat black ink.

DON'T LET THEM TEST THE BABY'S DNA.

Aurora's blood ran cold.

At the bottom of the note...

Was a symbol.

A small silver phoenix.

The exact same phoenix engraved on the cufflinks Julian had inherited from his supposedly dead father.

Someone inside the mansion had left the message.

Someone was watching her.

Someone already knew the truth about the baby.

Aurora slowly lifted her eyes...

Only to find Adrian staring directly at her from across the table.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Instead, he gave the smallest possible shake of his head.

As if silently warning her—

May you like

Run.
