Chapter 4 - The Shadow War BeginsWhile Lena recovered under twenty-four-hour armed guard in the secure wing of St. Jude’s, the underworld of New York was boiling over.

In a dimly lit warehouse in Queens, Victor Hail—the ruthless boss of the Irish-Italian syndicate alliance—slapped his hand down on a mahogany table, shattering a crystal glass.

"What do you mean, he hasn't retaliated for Red Hook?" Victor snarled at his lieutenant. "Valente loses two of our supply trucks, we hit his turf, and the bastard does nothing? He hasn't left that private hospital in three days! Is he losing his mind?"

"Boss, it’s worse than that," the lieutenant stammered, wiping sweat from his brow. "Nico hasn't been doing mob business. He’s been auditing our front companies. He’s systematically dismantling every shell corporation, every real estate trust, every illegal clinic and nursing home front we use to launder money. He’s cutting off our entire financial oxygen supply—from the inside."

Victor’s face drained of color. "Why? What changed?"

Before the lieutenant could answer, the heavy steel doors of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening blast. Splintered wood and smoke filled the air as Tommy Ricci stepped through the haze, flanked by a dozen heavily armed enforcers holding assault rifles.

"Nico Valente sends his regards," Tommy said coldly, raising a silenced pistol.

The shootout was short, brutal, and entirely one-sided. Valente’s men moved with terrifying precision, clearing the warehouse in less than two minutes. When Tommy walked over to Victor Hail, who was pinned beneath a fallen beam with a shattered leg, he leaned down and whispered, "You thought you were fighting a territory war. You didn't realize you were standing in the way of a man who just found his conscience."

Back at St. Jude’s, Nico stood by Lena’s bedside, watching her sleep peacefully while Bruno rested his heavy chin across her feet. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, reading a short encrypted text from Tommy: Queens is secured. Financial assets frozen. The board is clear.

Nico slipped the phone back into his pocket and turned off the overhead lights, leaving only the soft amber glow of the bedside lamp. He pulled up a chair beside Lena, folding his hands over his knees.

He thought he was the master of New York. But as he looked at the sleeping nurse and the scarred dog that had humbled him, he finally understood the truth: his entire empire had been built on a foundation of sand, and the tide was finally coming in.
