Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE OF PENTHOUSE 40

The rain fell in heavy, blinding sheets over the downtown skyline.

At the top of the luxury St. Regis Hotel, Penthouse 40 was a glass-walled sanctuary of modern opulence. Inside, soft jazz played through hidden speakers, and the city lights twinkled like diamond dust below.

Assistant Director Hayes sat in a deep leather armchair, swirling a glass of neat bourbon. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows was Isabella Torino, dressed in a sleek velvet dress, staring out at the storm.

“It’s done,” Hayes said, looking down at his encrypted phone. “The city police have locked down the estate. The media is running the story about a tragic home invasion. By tomorrow morning, the judge will sign off on the asset freeze, and the offshore transfers will clear.”

Isabella didn't turn around. “And Marcus?”

“Marcus is being handled,” Hayes replied coldly. “He knows too much, and he’s too weak. The Russians are taking care of him as we speak. By dawn, the Torino family will be a memory, and the port will be open for business.”

Isabella took a breath, letting out a long, shuddering sigh. “Thirty years, Arthur. Thirty years I pretended to love that monster.”

“You don't have to pretend anymore,” Hayes said, standing up and walking toward her, his glass held high. “To new beginnings.”

CRASH!

The massive floor-to-ceiling glass panel behind Isabella exploded inward in a shower of a million glittering shards.

The storm roared into the penthouse, bringing with it a freezing gust of wind and rain.

Before Hayes could drop his glass, a heavy steel grappling hook swung through the shattered window, attached to a high-tension cable. Descending from the roof above, black tactical gear dripping with rain, was Elena Vance.

She hit the marble floor, rolled through the broken glass, and came up with her weapon raised.

POP! POP!

The two private security guards standing near the bar went down instantly, blood blooming across their white dress shirts as they hit the floor.

Hayes scrambled backward, reaching for the sidearm tucked into his leather holster, but before his fingers could touch the grip, a shadow filled the shattered window frame.

Vincent Torino stepped into the penthouse.

He didn't have a harness. He didn't have a wire. He was soaked to the bone, his expensive suit ruined, his eyes glowing with the primal rage of a resurrected king.

In his right hand, he held a heavy tactical shotgun. In his left hand, he carried a heavy steel briefcase.

Isabella screamed, stumbling backward, her heels catching on the rug as she fell hard against the leather sofa. “Vincent! No! It’s impossible!”

Vincent didn't look at her. His eyes were locked on Assistant Director Hayes.

“Arthur,” Vincent said, his voice easily cutting through the roar of the wind blowing through the broken window. “You took my money. You took my home. You took my wife.”

Vincent stepped forward, setting the heavy steel briefcase down on the glass coffee table between them.

“Now,” Vincent said smoothly. “Let’s talk about what I’m going to take from you.”

Hayes’s face had turned completely white. “Vincent... listen to me. I’m a high-ranking officer in the Federal Bureau. If you kill me, every agency in this country will hunt you to the ends of the earth.”

Elena stepped up alongside Vincent, her badge hanging openly around her neck, her gun locked squarely on Hayes’s forehead.

“They won't have to hunt him, Arthur,” Elena said, her voice dropping like an anvil. “Because I’ve been streaming this entire room directly to the Department of Justice internal affairs server for the last two minutes.”

Hayes’s eyes flicked to Elena’s chest, where a small, pinhole camera was blinking with a tiny green light.

His knees gave out. The glass of bourbon fell from his hand, shattering on the hardwood floor.

“You... you betrayed your country for a mobster?” Hayes choked out, staring at Elena in absolute disbelief.

“No,” Elena said coldly. “I upheld my oath. You’re the one who sold your badge for a kickback in the Caymans.”
