Chapter 6 - The Return to Park SlopeTwo days later, the morning sun finally broke through the gray winter clouds over Brooklyn, casting a crisp, golden light across the brownstones of Park Slope.

I unlocked the front door of our apartment.

Inside, professional cleaners hired by my corporate legal team were already at work, scrubbing away every trace of the neglect and chaos left behind. The air smelled faintly of fresh lemon disinfectant and eucalyptus. The thermostat hummed quietly, pumping a steady, warm wave of heat through the radiators.

I walked into the master bedroom. Maya was sitting propped up against a pile of plush, clean pillows, wearing a soft cashmere sweater I had managed to buy the day before. Little Liam was sleeping peacefully in his bassinet, his tiny cheeks flushed with healthy warmth, wrapped in soft flannel blankets.

Maya looked up as I walked in, a shy, tentative smile touching her lips.

"The apartment... it feels so different," she whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "It feels safe."

"It is safe," I said softly, walking over to the bed and sitting down beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. "They're still being held at Rikers Island awaiting arraignment. Their bail was set at a quarter-million dollars each, and since I froze all joint assets and corporate accounts they had access to, none of their friends or associates can post it."

Maya rested her head against my chest, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Your mother... she called my phone from the jailhouse payphone this morning. I didn't answer it."

"Good," I said, pulling out my phone and blocking the facility's incoming number with a single tap. "You never have to answer her calls again, Maya. Nor do I. We're cutting them completely out of our lives. Permanently."

She looked up at me, a mixture of fear and profound relief in her eyes. "Can we really do that? After all these years of them controlling everything?"

"We aren't just cutting them out," I said, a firm, reassuring smile on my face. "Yesterday, my lawyer filed the paperwork to dissolve every shared family trust, transfer the title of the Queens commercial property strictly into your name and mine, and change our banking protocols so that not a single penny of my income will ever touch anyone's hands except ours."

Maya reached up, touching my cheek gently with her warm hand. "Thank you for coming home early, David. Even if it started as a nightmare, you saved us."

"I should have come home sooner," I murmured, kissing her forehead. "From now on, it's just the three of us. No outside interference. No parasites. Just our family."

As if on cue, little Liam let out a soft, contented sigh in his bassinet, stretching his tiny arms out into the warm air of the room.

The nightmare of New Year's Eve was over. But the legal storm brewing for my family was only just beginning.
