Chapter 2 - THE ER LOCKDOWNDr. Hannah Scott immediately signalled for security. “Get this woman out of my trauma bay!”

Two heavy-set security guards escorted Mary out, though she didn't struggle further; she simply adjusted her coat, wiped a stray speck of rain from her lapel, and smiled a chilling, composed smile.
“Dr. Scott,” I choked out, the sound barely more than a raspy whisper. I grabbed the sleeve of her scrubs, my knuckles turning white.
“Don't try to talk, Clara,” Hannah said gently, checking my IV line. “You have severe laryngeal trauma and three cracked ribs. You need rest.”
“No...” I squeezed her arm harder, pointing weakly toward my purse sitting on the bottom tray of the medical cart. “My... phone. Encrypted... flash drive...”
Hannah paused, seeing the absolute terror and urgency in my eyes. She reached into my bag, pulling out the small steel drive wrapped in electrical tape.
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the emergency room flickered rapidly, dimmed, and then plunged the entire wing into pitch darkness.
Alarms began to beep frantically as backup generators whirred to life, throwing eerie red emergency light across the room.
“What happened?” Nurse Sarah called out from the hallway. “The main power grid just went offline!”
My heart dropped into my stomach. I knew exactly what happened.
Beckett’s family didn't just want control of Vance-Cybertech—they had hired an external team to monitor the company’s internal network. The moment my recorder went live, an automated kill-switch had been triggered to wipe out the hospital’s electronic records, including the digital backup of my audio file that Thompson had just uploaded to the police server.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor—heavy, deliberate, and rapid.
“Dr. Scott!” a voice yelled from the hallway. “Someone just intercepted the transport unit! Officer Thompson is down!”
