Chapter 4 - Playing with Fire

The Blackwood Estate was an old colonial fortress situated on a lonely cliff overlooking the Atlantic, surrounded by high stone walls and a small army of private security guards loyal only to Dante.

By midnight, Noah had finally fallen asleep in one of the massive upstairs bedrooms, exhausted by the trauma of the day. Downstairs in the grand library, a fire crackled in the hearth, throwing long, dancing shadows across the rows of leather-bound books.

Brooke stood by the fire, holding a glass of amber liquid she hadn't touched. Dante entered quietly, having changed out of his ruined suit into a black sweater. He looked less like a boss now and more like a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

“He’s asleep,” Dante said, standing a few feet away from her. “Victor is outside his door. Nothing gets through.”

Brooke didn't look at him. “How did it come to this, Dante? We had a beautiful, simple life. Now my son knows what a sniper rifle sounds like.”

“I’m sorry,” Dante said, and for the first time in his adult life, he meant it completely. “I didn't know my father threatened you. If I had known, I would have killed him myself nine years ago.”

Brooke turned to face him, her eyes fierce. “You say that so easily. Killing. Destroying. Empires. Is that all you are?”

“It’s what I had to become to survive,” Dante said, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a vulnerable whisper. “When I lost you, I thought the world was just a cruel, empty machine. So I took the wheel. I thought if I was powerful enough, nobody could ever hurt me again. But today, when that boy ran into me… I realized I didn't build an empire to protect myself. I built a cage. And I’ve been living in it alone.”

Brooke’s gaze softened slightly. She saw the exhaustion in his posture, the deep-seated sorrow that all the money in the world couldn't cure. “He loves airplanes,” she said softly. “He wants to be an aerospace engineer. He’s brilliant, Dante. He builds these intricate models out of whatever scrap he can find.”

A faint smile touched Dante’s lips. “He told me he was pursuing an aircraft. He’s got your stubbornness.”

“He’s got your jaw,” she replied, a small, sad smile appearing on her face before it faded. “What are you going to do, Dante? Marcus won't stop. The board of Vale Maritime won't stop. They see Noah as a target.”

Dante’s expression turned utterly cold. He walked over to a laptop sitting on the mahogany desk and opened it. A massive database of encrypted files flickered on the screen.

“This is the ledger,” Dante said. “Every bribe, every illegal shipping route, every shell corporation, every dirty politician under the Vale payroll for the last forty years. The FBI has been dying to get their hands on this for decades.”

Brooke gasped. “If you give them that… you’ll go to prison. You’ll lose everything.”

“I’ll lose the empire,” Dante corrected, looking directly into her eyes.

“But I will save my son. I’m going to leak the entire database to the Department of Justice tomorrow morning. I’m going to freeze every asset, burn every contract, and turn state’s evidence against my own family syndicate. By the time I’m done, Vale Maritime won't exist. There will be nothing left for them to fight over.”

Brooke stared at him, stunned by the sheer magnitude of his sacrifice. The most feared man in Boston was willingly committing professional suicide to buy his family’s freedom.

Before she could speak, the library doors flew open. Victor stood there, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, his face twisted in panic.

“Dante… it’s Marcus,” Victor gasped, collapsing against the doorframe. “He didn't attack the house. He didn't have to. He bought one of the night guards. They didn't come for you, boss… they took Noah from the upstairs window while we were monitoring the perimeter.”

Dante’s laptop clicked shut. The fire in the hearth seemed to instantly freeze.
