Chapter 8 - The Price of the Crown"You think this gives you victory?" Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying mix of fury and despair. She didn't look like a corporate titan anymore; she looked like an old woman standing atop a crumbling mountain of her own sins. "You’ve destroyed generations of work in five minutes. The board will implode, the stock will plummet to zero, and the family name will be dragged through the mud."

"The family name was rotting from the inside out long before today," I replied, meeting her gaze without flinching. "I’m just disinfecting the wound."

Before Eleanor could fire another shot, the heavy boardroom doors swung open once more.

Two federal marshals in dark tactical vests stepped into the room, flanked by an investigator from the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The lead investigator didn't even look at my mother; he walked straight up to Arthur Cartwright and placed a heavy pair of steel handcuffs on his wrists.

"Arthur Cartwright, you're under arrest for corporate fraud, securities manipulation, and obstruction of justice," the investigator announced, the metallic click of the cuffs echoing loudly through the silent room.

Arthur let out a ragged gasp, slumping forward as the marshals hauled him away toward the elevators.

Eleanor sank slowly back into her leather chair, her shoulders sagging under the crushing weight of defeat. The board members around the table began packing their briefcases in absolute, frantic silence, eager to distance themselves from a sinking ship.

Mara stood quietly by the window, watching the city skyline wake up beneath the winter sun. I walked over to her, the four boys trailing closely behind us like ducklings following their parents.

"Is it over?" Mara asked softly, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"No," I said, looking down at the four small faces staring up at us with bright, curious eyes. "It’s just beginning."
