Chapter 1 - THE RECKONING AT THE DEEP END

The estate doctor, Dr. Harrison, rushed through the parting crowd, his face pale as he knelt beside Grace. The silence hanging over the Blackwood estate was so thick it was suffocating. Nobody dared to breathe. Nobody dared to move.
Ethan held Grace’s shaking hands, his eyes locked onto her pale face. "Check the baby, Harrison. Now," he commanded, his voice dropping into a register that made the seasoned doctor flinch.
Dr. Harrison quickly checked Grace's vitals, pressing a portable ultrasound wand he’d grabbed from his estate clinic onto her wet belly. For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound was the rustle of the wind. Then, the rapid, steady thump-thump-thump of a fetal heartbeat echoed from the monitor.
A collective sigh of relief swept through the crowd. Grace closed her eyes, tears mingling with the pool water on her cheeks. "He’s stable, Mr. Blackwood," Dr. Harrison breathed, wiping sweat from his forehead. "But Mrs. Blackwood is in shock. We need to get her inside immediately."
"Take her to the master suite. Don't leave her side," Ethan ordered. He lifted Grace into his arms as if she weighed nothing, ignoring his own soaking clothes, and carried her toward the house. As he handed her over to the medical staff at the glass doors, he whispered into her ear, "You're safe now. I’m going to handle this."
When Ethan turned back to the patio, the temperature of the entire estate seemed to drop into sub-zero territory.
Vanessa Cole was standing near the edge of the pool, trying to smooth down her damp red designer gown. Her initial malice had mutated into sudden, crippling panic. She looked around, searching for an ally among the elite guests, but everyone scrambled away from her as if she were carrying a plague.
"Ethan..." Vanessa stammered, her voice high and trembling as he walked toward her. His footsteps left wet, heavy imprints on the white marble. "Ethan, it was an accident! She tripped. I was just trying to steady her, I swear! She’s clumsy, Ethan, you know how she is—"
Ethan stopped exactly one foot away from her. He didn't yell. He didn't rage. He simply stared down at her with eyes that looked like shattered ice.
"An accident," Ethan repeated, the words dripping with absolute venom.
"Yes! Ask anyone!" Vanessa pleaded, looking desperately at the crowd. Everyone looked away. "Ethan, we’ve known each other for years. Our families are business partners. You wouldn't let a nobody like her ruin what we have..."
Ethan reached out. His hand didn't go for her throat; instead, he gently, almost agonizingly slowly, plucked a stray flower petal from Vanessa’s wet shoulder. Vanessa gasped, thinking for a split second she was safe.
Then, Ethan spoke, his voice carrying clearly over the silent lawn. "Security."
Four massive, armored guards materialized from the shadows of the estate.
"Take Ms. Cole," Ethan said, never breaking eye contact with her. "And throw her out of my gates. If she resists, drag her. If her family objects, tell them Cole Industries will be bankrupt by midnight tomorrow."
Vanessa’s eyes went wide. "You can't do this! Ethan! My father will destroy your upcoming merger!"
"Your father will be lucky if he keeps his house," Ethan whispered. "And Vanessa? If anything happens to my wife or my child in the next twenty-four hours... God himself won't be able to hide you from me."
The guards grabbed Vanessa by her manicured arms. She screamed, kicking and cursing, her designer heels scraping against the stone as she was violently dragged down the long, gravel driveway in front of New York's entire high society.
Ethan turned his gaze to the rest of the guests. They shrank back.
"The party is over," Ethan announced coldly. "Leave. Now."
Within five minutes, the estate was completely empty. But as Ethan walked back into the mansion, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an unlisted number. He answered it, his voice a low growl. "Who is this?"

A distorted, raspy voice laughed on the other end. "You think Vanessa Cole is your only enemy, Blackwood? Look closer at your precious wife's medical records. You're raising a child that isn't even yours."
The line went dead.
