Chapter 7 - The Trial of ShadowsThe heavy door was blown off its hinges with a deafening explosion!

Smoke and blinding light poured into the room as men in black tactical gear burst through the breach, suppressed weapons raised.
Maya fired three rapid shots, providing suppressive fire as Marcus and I scrambled into the narrow service tunnel behind the server racks.
“Run!” Marcus screamed, shoving me forward through the dark, damp conduit beneath the city streets.
We ran blindly through the storm drains, the echo of gunfire dying down behind us. My lungs burned, my legs screamed with exhaustion, but the memory of my mother’s tired, forgiving eyes kept me pushing forward through the darkness.
We emerged two miles away from an open manhole cover into an alleyway near the Federal Courthouse downtown.
It was 8:00 AM.
The news stations were already broadcasting live outside the courthouse. District Attorney Richard Vance was scheduled to hold a major press conference on the steps of the courthouse to address the death of Victor Hayes and the stayed execution of Caroline Hayes.
Marcus and I squeezed through the gathering crowd of reporters, cameramen, and curious onlookers.
There he stood at the podium—Richard Vance, impeccably dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking calm, authoritative, and completely untouched by the horror he had caused.
“...While the tragic death of Victor Hayes in county custody remains under investigation,” Richard was saying smoothly into a cluster of microphones, “the state remains confident in the original verdict. Caroline Hayes remains a convicted murderer, and once this brief procedural delay is cleared, justice will be served...”
“JUSTICE?!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, breaking through the police barricade and rushing toward the steps.
“Security! Grab him!” Richard ordered, his eyes narrowing as he recognized me.
Two armed bailiffs tackled me to the ground, pinning my face against the cold marble steps.
Marcus stepped past the barricade, holding a tablet computer high above his head, connected directly to the press core’s broadcast feed via an external transmitter Maya had set up before the raid.
“BROTHER!” Marcus shouted, his voice echoing across the plaza. “LOOK AT THE SCREENS!”
Every news truck’s live display monitor—and the massive jumbo screen hanging over the city square—suddenly flickered, overriding the live broadcast.
The hidden camera footage from my father’s study began playing in high-definition audio and video for millions of viewers across the nation.
Richard Vance’s brutal strike. His cold, calculated instructions to Victor. The planting of the knife.
The entire crowd gasped in collective horror. Reporters dropped their notebooks. Cameramen frantically zoomed in on the jumbo screen, then back to Richard Vance’s face.
Richard stared at the screen, his polished facade collapsing into absolute, paralyzed terror. His hands began to shake uncontrollably.
Federal Marshals—who had been quietly monitoring the broadcast from inside the courthouse—marched out of the glass double doors behind Richard.

Before Richard could take a single step, the lead Federal Marshal grabbed his shoulder, turning him around and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists right in front of fifty live television cameras.
“Richard Vance,” the Marshal announced into the crisp morning air, “you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, capital murder, and civil rights violations under color of law.”
