Chapter 5 - The Final confrontation

His father thought he was the patriarch of the family. He was about to find out he was nothing but a pawn.Alejandro drove back to his house at a breakneck speed, the tires of his truck screeching as he rounded the corners of his quiet neighborhood. Javier followed closely behind in his own car.
He had assumed his father, Roberto, was just an old-fashioned man with outdated ideas about family hierarchy. He had assumed his father was oblivious to the criminal plot.
He was wrong.
Alejandro slammed the brakes in front of his house, threw the door open, and stormed inside.
The living room was quiet, but the light in the home office was on. Alejandro marched down the hallway, throwing the office door open with such force it slammed against the wall.
Roberto was sitting at Alejandro's desk, typing furiously on Alejandro's laptop. On the desk lay a stack of blank checks and a physical security token that Alejandro kept hidden in a locked drawer—a drawer that had also been pried open.
Roberto looked up, his face hardening into a scowl when he saw his son. "What are you doing here? I thought you were at work."
"Where is the money, Dad?" Alejandro asked, his voice dangerously low.
Roberto stood up, drawing himself up to his full height, attempting to use the same imposing, patriarchal authority he had used to control Alejandro his entire life. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm just organizing some files."
"Don't lie to me!" Alejandro roared, stepping closer. "Carlos and Mom are in handcuffs right now. They were arrested at the notary's office. The police are on their way here."
Roberto flinched, the color draining from his weathered face. For a second, a flash of fear crossed his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a stubborn, arrogant rage.
"They were arrested?" Roberto spat. "Because of you? You called the police on your own mother and brother? You are a monster, Alejandro! A disgrace to our name!"
"I am a disgrace?!" Alejandro laughed, a bitter, broken sound. "You came into my home. You treated my wife like a slave. You let your eldest son abuse my family, and all the while, you were planning to rob my child's future! Why, Dad? Why would you do this to me? I have done nothing but support you since I was eighteen years old!"
Roberto’s face twisted with a deep-seated, bitter resentment. "Support us? You call this support? You live in a beautiful house in the city. You have a successful career. And what does your brother have? Nothing! He’s been struggling for years, and you wouldn't even help him get a job!"
"Carlos didn't want a job!" Alejandro shouted. "He wanted a handout! He wanted my life without working for it!"
"He is the eldest!" Roberto roared, slamming his fist on the desk. "In our family, the eldest inherits! You should have shared this house with him. You should have given him your savings. Everything you have belongs to this family, not to that... that useless woman you married!"
At that moment, Alejandro realized the terrifying truth. His father wasn't just old-fashioned. He was a narcissist who viewed Alejandro not as a son, but as a financial asset to be used and discarded for the benefit of his favorite child, Carlos.
"You're wrong, Dad," Alejandro said, his voice dropping to a whisper of absolute finality. "Nothing I have belongs to you. Not this house, not this money, and certainly not my loyalty."
Javier entered the room, holding his phone. "Alejandro, the police have arrived outside. And the bank just confirmed they blocked the transfer. The money is safe."
Roberto looked out the window, seeing the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the glass. His arrogance finally collapsed, replaced by the pathetic whimpering of a desperate old man.
"Alejandro... please," Roberto begged, his voice cracking. "Don't do this. I'm your father. You can't let them take me. What will people in our town say? We will be ruined!"
"You ruined yourselves the moment you crossed my threshold with malice in your hearts," Alejandro said, stepping back to let the police officers enter the room.

As the officers moved in to arrest Roberto for conspiracy and attempted grand theft, Alejandro turned his back on his father, just as he had done to his brother and mother.
He walked out of the house into the cool, fresh air. The storm had passed, and for the first time in two months, he could finally breathe.
