Chapter 8 - A New DawnSix months later.

The summer breeze swept softly across the lush green hills of the quiet farm country, far away from the concrete noise and corrupt shadows of the city.

I sat on the wooden porch of our new home—a cozy, sunlit cottage bought with the fully restored Thorne Trust estate, which had been legally transferred back to Brooke after a lengthy federal audit.

The Vance empire was completely dismantled. Trevor Vance was currently serving a thirty-five-year sentence without parole for attempted murder, conspiracy, and corporate fraud. Victoria Vance’s body had been recovered from the ash of the mansion, ending a reign of terror that had lasted two decades.

The screen door creaked open behind me.

Brooke walked out onto the porch, carrying two cups of fresh warm tea. She looked healthy, vibrant, her skin glowing under the warm sun. The physical scars on her face had faded into soft lines, and the cold, dark aura that had possessed her during our nightmare was completely gone.

She sat down beside me, resting a hand on her heavily swollen belly.

"The doctor said another two weeks," Brooke smiled softly, taking a sip of tea. "A healthy baby girl."

"She’s going to be strong," I said, putting my arm around my daughter's shoulders. "Just like her mother."

Brooke leaned her head against my shoulder, looking out at the golden fields stretching toward the horizon.

"You know, Mom," Brooke murmured softly. "That night at the bus stop... when I was lying in the freezing rain, bleeding and terrified, I thought my life was over. I thought the darkness had won."

"And now?" I asked quietly.

Brooke smiled—a genuine, warm, beautiful smile that I hadn't seen in years. She looked down at her hands, then over at me.

"Now I know that sometimes, you have to walk through the fire to burn down the monsters."

A gentle kicked fluttered beneath her hand, and for the first time in a long time, the only sounds in our world were the rustling leaves, the soft breeze, and the peaceful, unbroken promises of a new day.
