Chapter 10 - The New FoundationSix months later, autumn returned to Nashville, painting the rolling hills of Middle Tennessee in brilliant shades of amber, copper, and gold.

The backyard of our Elmwood Street home was unrecognizable. We had torn down the old, rotting patio and replaced it with a massive, beautiful stone deck surrounded by blooming hydrangeas and a safe, modern play set for little Frederick, who was now running around on sturdy little legs, laughing as he chased our golden retriever puppy.
Amy stood beside me on the back porch, holding a warm cup of coffee in her hands, her hair blowing gently in the crisp morning breeze. She was wearing the blue dress I had tried to surprise her with on that fateful birthday afternoon—the dress she had admired online, now fit for a queen.
“You know,” Amy murmured, leaning her head gently against my shoulder, “for a long time, I was terrified of this house. Every time I heard the back door open, my heart would stop.”
I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her close against my chest. I looked out over our backyard, past the white fence, toward the golden horizon.
“You never have to be afraid of the back door opening again, honey,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head. “The people who tried to break our foundation are gone. And what we’ve built together? Nothing in this world can ever tear it down.”

Frederick let out a joyful squeal from the lawn, running toward us with his arms wide open, tripping softly onto the green grass before popping right back up with a bright, fearless smile.
The nightmare was over. Our new life had finally begun, built on truth, strength, and an unbreakable love that no amount of poison could ever destroy.
