Chapter 8 - The Price of Truth

The waiting room clock ticked past midnight. Hours had bled into one another like watercolor in the rain.

The hospital was dead silent except for the low hum of the vending machines down the hall. I sat in a hard plastic chair, the heavy leather briefcase resting securely between my feet, the flash drive and ledger burning a hole in my consciousness.

The heavy doors of the ICU wing swung open, and Dr. Vance walked out. He looked exhausted, his white lab coat rumpled, dark circles etched deep beneath his tired eyes.

I stood up immediately, my legs shaking. "Doctor? Is she...?"

Dr. Vance stopped in front of me and let out a long, slow breath. He didn't smile, but his expression carried a profound, heavy weight of hard-fought survival.

"She's alive, Charles," he said softly. "Barely. We got her back after three minutes of CPR and emergency epinephrine. Her heart is beating on its own again, but her body is running on pure borrowed time. She has hours, maybe a couple of days at most. But she’s conscious right now. And she asked for you."

Without waiting for another word, I brushed past him and hurried down the hallway to Room 412.

When I pushed the door open, the room was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a single bedside lamp. Sarah was lying propped up against the pillows, her face translucent and pale as porcelain, but her eyes—those familiar, expressive eyes—were open.

As I walked over and sat down beside the bed, she turned her head slowly, looking at the briefcase resting on my lap. A faint, tired smile touched the corners of her lips.

"You... you found it," she whispered, her voice barely a breath of wind.

"I found it," I said, my voice choking with emotion as I reached out and gently took her cold hand. "And I read the letter, Sarah. I know everything."

She closed her eyes for a second, a tear slipping down her hollow cheek. "I'm sorry, Charles. I'm so sorry I dragged you into this."

"Shut up," I said, leaning in close, my voice fierce and steady. "You didn't drag me anywhere. We're going to finish this together. Right now, this briefcase is going straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Victor Vance and Julian Sterling are going down, and your name is going to be cleared once and for all."

Sarah looked up at me, a profound, aching peace washing over her features for the first time in three years.

"And us?" she whispered, squeezing my fingers with the last remaining ounce of strength she had. "What happens to us?"

I smiled, leaning down to press my forehead gently against hers, feeling the warmth of her skin despite the coldness of the room.

"We have a lot of lost time to make up for," I whispered against her hair. "And wherever you go from here... I'm not letting go again."

Outside the hospital window, the Miami night sky slowly began to bleed into the first pale shades of dawn. The nightmare wasn't over yet—Victor and Julian were still out there, and the storm was coming. But as I sat holding Sarah's hand in the quiet light of morning, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

The secrets were out. And the truth was finally ready to fight back.
