Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Basement

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I snapped the personnel folder shut, shoved it back into the metal filing cabinet, and slipped into the pitch-black gap between two towering shelving units just as a beam of light cut across the concrete floor.

"Danielle?"

Marcus’s voice echoed through the damp basement, smooth, mocking, and utterly chilling.

"I know you're down here, honey," he called out, his footsteps drawing closer. "Sarah’s cute little attempt at covering for you upstairs was sloppy. I saw her hand you her spare desk keys. Did you really think you could outsmart me in my own domain?"

I held my breath, pressing my back flat against the cold concrete wall. My fingers curled around the edge of a heavy metal binder on the lower shelf, ready to use it as a weapon if he rounded the corner.

The light swept across the floorboards inches from my shoes.

"You know, I genuinely tried to make this easy for you," Marcus continued, his tone turning casual, conversational, like a husband chatting while walking through a grocery store. "A nice dinner, a quiet night in, a peaceful transition. But you just had to go digging, didn't you? Women always ruin a good plan by asking too many questions."

A metallic clink echoed—he was setting something down on a nearby metal desk.

"If it makes you feel any better, the insurance payout clears my debts with the syndicate and leaves enough for a fresh start in the Cayman Islands. You're actually saving my life, Dani. Isn't that romantic?"

Creak.

He was only two rows away. The beam of his flashlight painted the wall opposite my hiding spot.

I needed a distraction, and I needed it now.

Spotting an old metal recycling bin filled with empty soda cans a few yards down the aisle, I slipped off my left heel and hurled it as hard as I could into the far corner of the room.

CLATTER-BANG!

The explosive noise shattered the quiet.

"Hey! Who's there?!" Marcus shouted, whirling around and sprinting toward the sound of the clatter.

I didn't hesitate. I bolted out from my hiding spot, sprinting in the opposite direction toward the heavy metal stairwell door, bursting up into the sunlight before he even realized he'd been tricked.
