Chapter 2 - The Estate on the CliffThe SUV drove for over an hour, leaving the city's concrete sprawl behind and climbing winding coastal roads until the asphalt gave way to heavy iron gates. The gates swung open automatically, revealing a sprawling stone estate perched precariously on a jagged cliff overlooking a churning, grey ocean.

The vehicle glided down a cypress-lined driveway and came to a halt in front of a grand double door. The scarred man—who introduced himself curtly as Viktor—escorted Lara inside.
The interior was a masterclass in intimidating luxury. Dark mahogany walls, towering marble fireplaces, and priceless oil paintings hung under vaulted ceilings. But what caught Lara’s attention wasn't the wealth; it was the absolute, suffocating silence. Armed guards stood at strategic corners, their suits fitting too smoothly over concealed hardware, their postures rigid.
Viktor led her past a sweeping staircase and down a wide corridor toward a pair of heavy double doors at the end. He pushed them open without knocking.
Seated behind a massive oak desk was the man from the gurney.
In the harsh light of the emergency room, pale and soaked in his own blood, he had looked vulnerable. Here, bathed in the amber glow of a desk lamp, framed by a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the violent sea, he was terrifying. The dark suit was gone, replaced by a crisp black turtleneck that accentuated the sharp lines of his jaw. The gunshot wound was clearly still causing him pain—his posture was fractionally stiff—but his storm-gray eyes were razor-sharp.
"Leave us, Viktor," the man said. His voice was a low, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate in the floorboards.
Viktor nodded once and slipped out, closing the heavy doors with a soft, final click.
"You have a very unorthodox way of showing gratitude, Mr...?" Lara began, setting her cardboard box down on a nearby side table. She refused to cower. In her line of work, she had dealt with addicts, gang members, and violent psychiatric patients; a man in a fancy house didn't faze her.
"Dimitri Sokolov," the man supplied, leaning back in his leather chair, interlocking his fingers over his flat stomach. "And you are Lara Vance. Fired this morning at 7:45 AM from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Stripped of your livelihood because you followed your instincts and kept your mouth shut when my men needed time to secure a safe extraction."
"I kept my mouth shut because a dying man is a liability to no one, and protocol gives a trauma nurse twenty-four hours to log secondary incident reports," Lara corrected smoothly. "Don't flatter yourself into thinking I did it for your charming personality. I did it because I didn't want a corpse on my shift creating paperwork."
A slow, genuine smile broke across Dimitri’s face, transforming his severe features into something startlingly handsome. "Paperwork. Is that what you call saving my life?"
"My job was stabilization. What happened after I clocked out is outside my billing code."
Dimitri stood up, wincing slightly as his core muscles pulled against the stitches. He walked slowly around the desk, stopping just a few feet away from her. Up close, the aura of absolute power rolling off him was palpable.

"St. Jude’s thought they were punishing you," Dimitri murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers. "They didn't realize they were unchaining a beast. But before we talk about your future, I want to show you something. Or rather, someone wants to see you."
He turned and let out a sharp, two-toned whistle toward the adjoining study.
