Chapter 6 - The Fall of Whitman EnterprisesWhile Emily began her slow, agonizing recovery in the ICU, the legal storm Arthur Vance had unleashed swept through Jackson like a Category 5 hurricane.

Michael returned to his downtown office building on the third day, looking like a corpse walking. He expected to walk into his glass-walled corner office, pour a scotch, and figure out how to salvage his marriage.

Instead, two security guards in black tactical gear blocked the elevator doors before they even opened.

“Mr. Whitman?” the larger guard asked, extending a laminated badge. “You are trespassing. By order of the board of directors and the majority stakeholder, your building access badge has been permanently deactivated.”

Michael stared at them, bewildered and exhausted. “Are you out of your mind? I am the majority stakeholder! I founded Whitman Enterprises!”

“Not anymore, sir,” a crisp, professional voice echoed from behind him.

Michael whipped around. Standing by the reception desk was Marcus Vance, Arthur’s younger brother and the premier corporate restructuring attorney in Mississippi. Marcus was holding a sleek leather briefcase and smiling with the cold amusement of an executioner.

“Marcus... what is this?” Michael stammered, stepping out of the elevator. “Where is my board? Where is my company?”

“Your company is currently undergoing forensic audit for corporate malfeasance, asset diversion, and tax fraud,” Marcus said smoothly, handing Michael a thick manila envelope. “When you diverted corporate funds to lease a luxury apartment and purchase jewelry for Ms. Jessica Monroe under the guise of ‘client entertainment,’ you triggered a forfeiture clause in your prenuptial agreement and corporate charter. Furthermore, Emily Whitman exercised her proxy rights granted under her father’s initial venture capital funding back in 2018. She now owns seventy-eight percent of the voting shares.”

Michael ripped open the envelope. Page after page of legal notices, asset seizures, and freezing orders stared back at him. His bank accounts—personal and business—were locked down to zero. His luxury car was currently being impounded from the hospital parking lot. Even his personal credit cards had been declined that morning.

“She... she took everything?” Michael whispered, the floor seemingly dropping out from under him.

“She took what was hers, Michael,” Marcus replied, adjusting his silk tie. “And what she needed to secure the future of her children. You wanted a high-stakes game with Jessica Monroe? Congratulations. You won. You’re completely, utterly bankrupt.”

Marcus turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Michael standing alone in the empty lobby, clutching a stack of papers that signified the total annihilation of his life.
