Chapter 4 - The Aftermath of Silence

The police sirens were distant at first, then they grew into a wailing chorus that signaled the end of the Bellini empire as it was known. Bianca was hauled away in handcuffs, screaming obscenities that made the refined guests look at their feet.

The house felt hollow, the opulence suddenly feeling like a tomb.

I sat in the kitchen, the adrenaline finally beginning to ebb, leaving me shaking. A cup of tea sat in front of me—cold. Rosa, the older woman who had been watching Luca, walked in and placed a hand on my back.

"He’s coming, Sofia," she whispered. "He’s on his way."

I nodded, unable to speak. My mind was still replaying the moment the gun went off. I had been so close to losing everything.

Nico walked in a few moments later. His sleeves were rolled up, and there was a cut on his cheek from the falling chandelier glass. He looked older than he had that morning, the weight of the night settling into his shoulders.

He stopped when he saw me. "Is he here?"

"He's in the car," I said. "Rosa is bringing him in."

"I'm sorry," he said. The words seemed to stick in his throat.

"For what?" I asked.

"For everything. For letting that woman into my house. For not protecting you. For thinking that I was the one in control."

I looked at him. There was a raw honesty in his face that I hadn't expected. "We all played our roles, Nico. But you’re the one who had to burn it all down."

He walked over and sat down at the table. "My mother is resting. She told me she wants to speak to you."

My breath hitched. "Now?"

"Yes."

I stood, my legs still wobbly, and walked back to the master suite. The room was quiet, the curtains drawn. Donna Elena was sitting by the window, the moonlight catching the silver in her hair. She looked peaceful, a weight lifted from her chest.

I knelt beside her. "Donna Elena?"

She reached out and took my hand. Her touch was warm, steady. She picked up the pen and wrote on the board.

My voice is gone, but my heart is full.

She looked at me, her eyes brimming with tears.

Thank you for being my voice when I couldn't scream.

I took her hand and pressed it to my cheek. "You saved us, Elena. Both of us."

She wrote one more line.

What now?

I looked toward the door. I could hear Luca’s voice in the hall, laughing at something the guards were saying. He was safe. He was here.

"Now," I said, "we live. And we never, ever stay silent again."

Nico appeared in the doorway. He leaned against the frame, watching us. He didn't look like a mob boss anymore. He looked like a man who had lost his armor and found himself.

"The house is quiet, Mama," he said. "For the first time in ten years, it’s quiet."

Donna Elena tapped the board twice. Yes.

I stood up, ready to go to my son, when Nico stopped me. "Sofia. Where will you go?"

I looked at the beautiful, cold, marble walls of the mansion. I thought about the smell of the perfume, the sound of the gun, and the way I had almost traded my life for a paycheck.

"I’m going home, Nico," I said. "A real home."

He nodded, a flicker of sadness in his eyes. "I understand. But you aren't leaving empty-handed. There is a debt, and I don't leave debts unpaid."

May you like

"I don't want your money," I said.

"It’s not money," he said. "It’s freedom. You’re done here. You and your son. You go, and you never look back. I’ll make sure of it."
