Chapter 1 - THE TORN RECEIPT AND THE BILLION-DOLLAR MARK

The gallery owner, Evelyn Vance, didn't just lunge; she threw her full weight forward, her manicured nails clawing toward the torn sheet of paper. Her silk dress rustled violently against the silence of the room. But Julian Sterling—a titan of the international art world whose paintings fetched tens of millions at auction—was faster.

With a swift, defensive pivot, Julian shielded the paper with his body, his eyes locked onto the bottom right corner of Lena’s sketch. His breath hitched.

"Julian, please," Evelyn sneered, smoothing down her designer dress, though a subtle bead of sweat glistened at her hairline. "Don't humiliate yourself over the scribbles of a girl who scrubs our toilets. She stole that paper from the gallery office. It’s trash."

"This isn't gallery paper," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and fury. He turned to Lena, ignoring the dozens of high-society guests whose champagne glasses were now frozen mid-air. "The cross-hatching... the dual-layered graphite pressure... and this mark. A three-pointed anchor entwined with a broken pendulum."

Lena huddled on her knees, her hands still clutching her wet mop. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "My father... he called it the Keeper’s Seal," she murmured, her voice barely audible above the hum of the gallery’s air conditioning. "He told me never to sign my real name. Only the seal."

Evelyn’s face drained of color. "Security! Escort this girl out immediately! She’s trespassing and causing a scene!"

Two burly men in black suits stepped forward from the gallery entrance. But before they could lay a hand on Lena, Julian stood tall, placing himself directly between the guards and the young cleaner.

"Touch her, and I withdraw every single piece of my collection from this gallery tonight," Julian announced, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "And I will personally ensure the Sotheby’s board knows that Vance Fine Art hires thugs to assault the daughter of Arthur Vance."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

Evelyn snapped. "Arthur Vance was a disgraced fraud! He died ten years ago in a warehouse fire after stealing the Sunlight Sonata!"

"He didn't steal it," Julian said, holding up Lena's torn sketch so the elite crowd could see the intricate, almost impossible geometry of the pencil lines. "He painted it. And for fifteen years, Evelyn, you’ve been selling his work under your late husband’s name. But Arthur left a master key in every stroke. A key only his true heir would know how to replicate."

Julian looked down at Lena, extending a hand to help her up from the cold floor. "Your father didn't die in that fire, Lena. And he didn't leave you penniless. He left you the blueprint to tear this entire empire down."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. "You think a ragged orphan girl with a torn sketch can destroy me, Julian? She doesn't even have a lawyer."

"She doesn't need one," Julian replied coldly, taking off his velvet jacket and placing it over Lena's wet, apron-clad shoulders. "She has me. And as of tonight, she has access to the vault."

As Julian led Lena toward the exit, passing a stunned crowd, Evelyn pulled out her encrypted phone, hiding behind a marble pillar.

"It's me," Evelyn whispered fiercely into the receiver. "The girl knows the seal. Initiate Protocol Seven. Make sure she doesn't survive the night."
