Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Empire

"Hello, Preston," Arthur Whitmore said smoothly, stepping into the room as if he owned the hospital. "You look surprised. Did you really think you could ruin my family name, dismantle my conglomerate, and walk away scot-free?"
My blood ran cold. The pieces of a much darker, more sinister puzzle began snapping into place with terrifying clarity.
"What did you do?" I roared, taking a step toward them, but Dr. Vance and a hospital security guard who had materialized in the hallway blocked my path.
"We didn't do anything illegal, Preston," Richard Thorne said smoothly, adjusting his tie with an obnoxious air of corporate arrogance. He pulled a gold-plated pen from his breast pocket and twirled it between his fingers. "As your COO, I simply managed your executive lifestyle portfolio. The imported spring water delivered exclusively to your mansion, the bespoke nutritional supplements your private chef prepares for you every morning... let’s just say, manufacturing a slow-release heavy-metal accumulation in a high-profile CEO's bloodstream is surprisingly easy when you control the supply chain."
My stomach heaved.
I looked from Richard to Arthur, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.
They hadn't just been trying to ruin my company or force a hostile takeover. They had been poisoning me from the inside out, slowly, methodically, ensuring that when the time was right, I would be rendered physically incapacitated—unable to fight back, unable to manage my assets, and now... unable to save my own son.
"You monsters," Emma gasped, pressing herself against the hospital bed, shielding little Ethan with her own body as if she could protect him from the sheer malice in the room. "He’s a child! What does a toddler have to do with your corporate vendettas?!"
"Nothing at all, my dear," Arthur smiled coldly, his eyes dead and unfeeling. "Collateral damage. We didn't even know the boy existed until three weeks ago when our private investigators tracked your sudden leave of absence from Preston’s estate straight to this children's ward."
Arthur stepped closer to the bed, looking down at Ethan with chilling indifference.
"Imagine our surprise," Arthur continued, his voice dripping with venom. "Preston Hale, the invincible tech god, has a secret heir. And that heir is dying of heart failure. And you, Preston," Arthur turned his gaze back to me, his smile widening into something truly demonic, "are the only matching donor on Earth. But thanks to Richard's little nutritional regime, your blood is toxic poison to your own flesh and blood."
I felt a roar of fury build deep within my chest, a primal, violent rage that eclipsed anything I had ever felt in my corporate career. I lunged forward, brushing past the security guard with sheer adrenaline, grabbing Richard Thorne by his expensive silk lapels and slamming him hard against the hospital wall.
The medical files went flying. The heart monitor beeped frantically.
"If he dies," I whispered, pressing my forearm against Richard's throat so hard he began to choke, "I will hunt down every single person involved in this. I will liquidate every asset I own, burn my entire empire to ash, and spend every last dime I have making sure you spend the rest of your miserable lives in a maximum-security prison. Do you understand me?!"
Richard clawed at my wrists, his face turning a deep shade of purple, terror finally breaking through his arrogant facade.
"Preston—stop—" Arthur barked, taking a step back. "Killing him won't save the boy! Even if you snap his neck right now, your toxicity levels won't drop in time! Ethan has less than forty-eight hours left! Without a clean donor, your son is dead!"
My hands trembled.
Slowly, agonizingly, I loosened my grip on Richard. He slumped against the wall, gasping for air, coughing violently as he clutched his throat.
I turned back to look at Emma.
She was kneeling beside the hospital bed, tears streaming down her face, gently stroking Ethan’s pale, feverish hair. She looked up at me, and in her eyes, there was no anger left—only a heartbreaking, quiet acceptance.
"There’s one way," Emma whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machines.
I froze. "What did you say?"
Emma stood up slowly, looking past Arthur and Richard as if they didn't even exist. Her gaze locked onto mine with a terrifying, absolute clarity.
"There is one other person on this planet who shares Ethan’s exact genetic markers," Emma said softly. "Someone whose bloodline carries the exact same rare tissue compatibility profile."

My mind raced through the possibilities. "Who? Your mother passed away, your father—"
"Not my family, Preston," Emma interrupted, a bitter smile touching her lips. "Yours."
