Chapter 2 - THE BASEMENT SAFE

"The gold card wasn’t an award. It was a death sentence."The glowing screen of Julian’s phone illuminated his pale face in the dimly lit breakroom. The party thrown by his desperate co-workers had finally ended, and the salon was pitch black. The heavy silence of the night felt suffocating.
Ask him what happened to the LAST young stylist...
The words repeated in Julian's head like a rhythmic drum beat. He couldn't just ignore it. Was it a prank sent by Victoria out of spite? Or was there something darker lurking beneath Marcus Sterling’s benevolent facade?
Julian grabbed his flashlight and crept toward the back of the salon, past the laundry facilities, toward the heavy steel door that led to the sub-basement. As a junior stylist, he had never been granted access down here.
The stairs creaked beneath his sneakers. The air grew damp, thick with the scent of bleach and old dust. At the far end of the narrow corridor stood a heavy, industrial steel safe bolted to the concrete wall.
Julian approached it, his heart hammering against his ribs. The safe had a digital keypad.
"What's the code?" he muttered to himself. He remembered the crumpled dollar bill Marcus had left on his tray. He reached into his pocket and unfolded the bill. Written in tiny, faded red ink along the serial number were four numbers: 0 - 4 - 1 - 9.
Trembling, Julian typed the digits into the keypad.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
CLICK.
The heavy metal door swung open with a dull hiss.
Julian swallowed hard, sweeping his flashlight beam inside. There were no stacks of cash or golden bars. Instead, there was a single, thick manila folder labeled: PROJECT CHRYSALIS: DISPOSABLE ASSETS.
He pulled out the file and opened it. Inside were photographs of a handsome young man, roughly thirty years old, wearing the exact same GM badge Julian had just been promised.
The man's name was Leo Vance.
Julian’s blood turned to liquid ice. Vance.
Leo was his older brother—the brother who had mysteriously vanished three years ago without a trace, leaving Julian and his mother devastated. The police had ruled it a missing person's cold case, assuming Leo had fled the country due to debts.
Julian frantically flipped through the pages.
Document after document detailed how Leo had been handpicked by Marcus Sterling under the exact same circumstances: an "undercover boss" test at a luxury branch, a public humiliation of bad staff, and an instant, life-changing promotion.
But then came the autopsy reports. Medical examiner documents marked CLASSIFIED.
Leo hadn't run away. Leo had died of systemic neurotoxin poisoning three weeks after taking the General Manager job. And tucked into the back of the folder was a signed life insurance policy.
Marcus Sterling was the sole beneficiary of a $20,000,000 corporate payout on Leo Vance's life.
"No... no, no, no," Julian gasped, tears stinging his eyes as he clutched the evidence to his chest. "He killed him. He set him up..."
Suddenly, the cold barrel of a handgun pressed firmly against the back of Julian's neck.
"You really shouldn't have looked down here, kid," a harsh, raspy voice growled behind him.
May you like
Julian stiffened, raising his hands slowly. "Who are you?"
"The guy who cleans up Mr. Sterling's dirty laundry," the man sneered, racking the slide of the pistol. "Now put the folder back, or your mom loses her second son tonight."
