Chapter 11 - THE FINAL RECKONINGAt 4:45 PM, the sun was setting over Manhattan, casting long, crimson shadows across the steps of the New York State Family Court building on Centre Street.

Standing on the top step, flanked by four high-powered corporate lawyers and two Italian embassy guards, was Elena Moretti. She wore a tailored white suit, holding a silver leather briefcase, looking at her diamond-encrusted watch with smug impatience.
A black armored Escalade pulled up to the curb below, followed by two police cruisers belonging to the NYPD Federal Task Force.
The Escalade door opened, and Ricardo stepped out onto the pavement. He looked regal, powerful, completely relaxed in his dark suit.
He walked around the vehicle, opened the passenger door, and held out his hand.
I stepped out, wearing a sharp navy suit, holding a thick leather folder under my arm. Then, Ricardo reached into the back seat and lifted four-year-old Leo into his arms.
Leo looked happy, wearing a tiny black blazer that matched his father's, clutching his wooden horse in one hand and my hand with the other.
Elena walked down the steps toward us, a triumphant, wicked smile stretching across her lips.
"You're just in time, Ricardo," Elena said smoothly, gesturing to the family court judge and the two federal marshals standing near the courthouse entrance. "Hand the boy over. The marshals are ready to execute the transfer."
The marshals stepped forward, looking uncomfortable, but bound by the court order. "Mr. Moretti, please step aside and hand the child to his mother."
Ricardo didn't move. He didn't argue.
He simply looked at me and nodded once.
I stepped forward, opening the leather folder, handing a single sheet of official paper along with an iPad to the lead federal marshal.
"Before you execute that order, Officer," I said clearly, my voice carrying across the quiet street, "you need to review the unsealed federal indictment issued thirty minutes ago by the Southern District of New York."
Elena's smile faltered slightly. "What are you talking about? That's nonsense!"
"Press play, Marshal," I said calmly.
The marshal hit play on the iPad.
The screen filled with the face of Sarah Vance, sitting in an interrogation room at FCI Hazelton, wearing an orange jumpsuit, testifying under oath beside her court-appointed attorney:
"Elena Moretti paid me three million dollars to systematically poison her with low doses of thallium over four months. She faked her death to frame Don Antonio and Ricardo, using an Italian intelligence passport she bought on the black market. She planned to return once Ricardo cleaned up the syndicate assets so she could seize fifty percent of the holdings. Here are the wire transfer records from her private Zurich account signed under her alias, Countess Elena Vance."
The lead marshal's face hardened into stone as he read the accompanying financial forensics reports stamped by the FBI Financial Crimes Division.
Elena's face went completely grey. The silver briefcase slipped from her hand, clattering against the concrete steps.
"This... this is a frame-up!" Elena shrieked, backing away toward her corporate lawyers, but her lawyers were already taking three steps back from her, washing their hands of the situation. "I am an Italian citizen! You can't arrest me!"
"Countess Elena Vance," the lead marshal said coldly, pulling out a set of heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, federal bank fraud, insurance fraud, and filing false law enforcement reports."
Two NYPD officers stepped forward, grabbing Elena's arms, pinning her against the hood of the police cruiser, clicking the cuffs tightly around her wrists.
"Ricardo!" Elena screamed, thrashing wildly as the officers forced her into the back seat of the squad car. "Ricardo, tell them! I'm your wife! I'm Leo's mother! You can't let them take me!"
Ricardo walked up to the side of the police car, looking down at her through the open window with cold, absolute detachment.
"You died eight months ago, Elena," Ricardo said softly. "The woman standing here is just a ghost."
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his gold wedding band—the ring he had worn for five years—and tossed it through the window into her lap.

"The divorce was finalized by the state ten minutes ago," Ricardo added smoothly. "Have a nice life in federal prison."
The police car slammed its door shut and pulled away from the curb, its sirens blaring as it carried Elena Moretti away forever.
