Chapter 12 - THE SUNSET ON THE HARBOROne year later.

The gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean lap against the hull of a magnificent hundred-foot white yacht cruising smoothly off the coast of Montauk, Long Island.

The sky above was a canvas of deep violet, gold, and burning orange as the sun sank below the horizon.

On the main deck, five-year-old Leo was running around in white shorts, laughing as he flew a large red kite with Dante, who was now wearing a comfortable linen shirt instead of his usual tactical suit.

I stood by the teak railing at the stern of the boat, wearing a flowing white silk gown, drinking a glass of sparkling champagne, watching the sea spray sparkle under the fading light.

Behind me, warm arms wrapped securely around my waist.

Ricardo pulled me against his chest, resting his chin against the top of my head, his deep heartbeat steady and strong against my back.

He wore a dark blue tuxedo jacket without a tie, his dark hair catching the golden evening light. On his left ring finger was a new band—a sleek, polished band of platinum set with a single, small sapphire.

A matching ring sat on my finger.

Two hours ago, on a quiet cliff overlooking the ocean, with only Leo, Dante, and a local judge present, Ricardo Moretti and I had been married.

"Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?" Ricardo whispered into my ear, his hand softly stroking my hand where our rings touched.

I turned in his arms, resting my hands against his chest, looking up into those striking hazel eyes that had once terrified me in a chaotic restaurant, but now held my entire world.

"I have never been happier in my life," I smiled, leaning up on my tiptoes, pressing a soft, deep kiss to his lips.

Ricardo kissed me back with a fierce, profound devotion that made the rest of the world fade into background noise.

When we finally parted, Leo came running over, throwing his tiny arms around both of our legs, looking up at us with wide, brilliant eyes filled with pure joy.

"Mommy! Daddy! Look!" Leo cheered, pointing up at the sky where his red kite was flying high and free above the ocean. "The kite is going all the way to the sun!"

Ricardo dropped down on one knee, picking Leo up in his right arm, wrapping his left arm around my waist, pulling us close together as the wind blew our hair across the warm evening air.

"It sure is, buddy," Ricardo smiled, looking at his son, then at me, his eyes shining with tears of pure gratitude. "It sure is."

I leaned against my husband's broad shoulder, watching our son laugh as the red kite soared higher and higher into the golden sky.

There were no more empty chairs. No more secrets. No more poisons.

We had built a family out of broken pieces, protected it through storms of blood and deceit, and finally found our peace in the quiet light of a new dawn.
