Chapter 3 - The Inside JobThe lobby was so silent that the ticking of the grand grandfather clock near the elevators sounded like drumbeats.

Ethan Brooks looked around at the executives, attorneys, and security guards who had mocked Noah just moments earlier. Vanessa, the receptionist, was staring at her desk phone as if it were a venomous snake, terrified of what her association with Laura and Marcus might mean for her own job.
“Laura,” Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he turned to face his assistant. “Eleven years. You managed my schedule, protected my privacy, and held the keys to my corporate vault. Why?”
Tears welled up in Laura’s eyes, her professional facade shattered beyond repair. She slumped against the marble counter, letting out a ragged, broken breath.
“Because you never promoted me, Ethan,” Laura whispered, her voice trembling with bitter resentment. “I built half the foundational contracts of this company while you took the glory and handed the executive seats to your golf buddies. Thomas promised me forty percent equity in the new venture. He promised me power.”
“Power built on theft is just a prison sentence with a better view,” Noah remarked quietly.
Before Laura could respond, Ethan turned to the head of his corporate security detail.
“Lock down the building,” Ethan commanded, his voice ringing with absolute authority. “Nobody enters. Nobody leaves. Freeze all outgoing wire transfers immediately.”
Marcus panicked. He lunged toward the private elevators, desperate to reach his office terminal and initiate the final 120-million-dollar override before the firewall locked him out.
With lightning speed, Noah stepped into his path, pivoted, and executed a sharp, textbook defensive sweep that sent Marcus crashing hard onto the marble floor.

Two security guards finally sprang into action, pinning Marcus’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
At the same time, a female security officer gently restrained a weeping, defeated Laura Bennett against the reception desk.
