Chapter 4 - The Digital TrapThe silence in the room grew suffocating. Outside, rain began to lash against the large panoramic windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside the house.

"Are you accusing one of us of theft?" Richard asked, his voice low and dangerous, though a thin sheen of sweat had broken out across his forehead. "Because without proof, that's slander, Dad. Even for you."

Arthur gave a cold, thin smile. "Proof is a fascinating thing in the digital age, Richard. People assume that because a safe is heavy steel, it's secure. They forget about modern technology."

Arthur tapped the arm of his leather chair. A small, concealed panel slid open on the side table, revealing a sleek tablet. He slid it across the mahogany coffee table toward my father.

"Look at the screen," Arthur commanded.

Richard hesitated, then leaned forward. His fingers hovered over the glass before he picked up the tablet. His eyes scanned the data, and as they did, all the color drained completely from his face.

It was a high-resolution video file, timestamped from the security camera hidden inside the study's crown molding.

On the screen, the camera view crystalized into sharp, brilliant color. The door of the private study clicked open. A figure slipped inside, moving with practiced familiarity. It wasn't a burglar wearing a mask or a stranger looking for silver candlesticks.

It was Ethan.

The video showed my brother stepping directly up to the wall safe behind the mahogany desk. Without a moment of hesitation, he punched a six-digit code into the keypad—081498, his own birthday—and the heavy steel door swung open. The video clearly captured him pulling out the leather-bound folder containing the original master wills, pulling out his smartphone, and photographing every single page with meticulous precision.

"Ethan..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking as he dropped the tablet back onto the table. He turned a furious, disbelieving glare toward his younger son. "You absolute fool! You broke into your grandfather's safe?"

Ethan backed away, his hands raised defensively. "I didn't mean to steal anything permanent! I just needed to know! Uncle Marcus said that if Grandpa updated his will after the stroke, we’d all be cut out. I had to check!"

"Uncle Marcus?" Arthur’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. "So my own estranged brother is coordinating with you behind my back?"

My mother covered her face with her hands, finally breaking down into jagged, genuine tears—not of grief, but of absolute panic as she realized the grand design was crumbling.
