Chapter 4 - THE PUBLIC EXECUTIONThe grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt was packed with local news reporters, camera crews, and prominent figures from the local business community.

Ryan stood behind the podium wearing a hastily bought, ill-fitting suit. His mother, Patricia, sat behind him on stage, dabbing her eyes with a tissue and looking the picture of a grieving, heartbroken mother.

“Thank you all for coming,” Ryan began, his voice quivering with calculated emotion as flashes exploded across the room. “I stand before you today not as a successful businessman, but as a victim of systematic financial manipulation. For five years, my wife, Claire Vance, used her family’s immense wealth to exert complete control over my life, my career, and my dignity.”

Patricia sobbed audibly in the background.

“Yesterday,” Ryan continued, looking dramatically into the main camera lens, “when I finally found the courage to ask for a divorce from an abusive, controlling marriage, she retaliated. She used fraudulent financial instruments to seize my home, freeze my company’s payroll, and throw my elderly parents out into the street. She has left forty hard-working employees of Vance Media without a paycheck right before the holidays.”

Murmurs rippled through the gathered journalists.

“I am appealing today to the justice system and to the public,” Ryan cried out, holding his hands up dramatically. “Do not let rich, powerful elites use their lawyers to crush the little guy! I only want what is fair! I only want my freedom!”

“Is that so, Ryan?” a voice echoed through the ballroom speakers.

The heavy double doors at the back of the room swung open.

I walked down the central aisle, flanked by two uniformed federal officers and the Chief Legal Officer of the State Financial Crimes Division. I wore a tailored ivory suit, my head held high, carrying a single black leather briefcase.

The room erupted into chaos. Camera crews pivoted instantly, light bars flashing as reporters rushed toward me with microphones.

“Mrs. Vance! Is it true you froze his employees’ salaries?!” “Did you throw his parents out?!”

I reached the front of the stage, looking up at Ryan, whose eyes were wide with sheer terror.

“Ryan,” I spoke clearly into the floor microphone. “You mentioned forty hard-working employees at Vance Media. Let’s talk about them.”

I opened the leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of documents, handing them directly to the lead reporter from the state’s largest news network.

“These are the official bank records from Vance Media’s corporate accounts,” I announced to the room. “They prove that yesterday at 8:45 a.m.—fifteen minutes before I transferred $150,000 to cover his corporate liabilities—Ryan Vance drained $400,000 from the employee pension fund and transferred it directly into a private account in Switzerland under the name of his mistress, Madison Reed.”

The ballroom went dead quiet.

Ryan’s jaw dropped. “That’s… that’s a lie! Those records are forged!”

“They aren’t forged, Mr. Vance,” Agent Miller from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division stepped onto the stage, pulling an official federal badge from his coat. “We verified the Swiss clearing numbers three hours ago with the Federal Banking Inspectorate.”

Patricia gasped, clutching her chest. “Ryan… what did you do?!”

“Furthermore,” I continued, turning to face the rolling cameras, “Ryan claimed I subjected him to financial abuse. What he neglected to mention is that over the past thirty-six months, he systematically embezzled $2.4 million from the Arthur Pendelton Pediatric Cancer Foundation—a charitable organization created in memory of my late father.”

Gasps rang out across the audience. Reporters began feverishly scribbling notes and snapping close-up photos of Ryan’s panicked face.

“Here are the wire receipts bearing Mr. Vance’s signature,” Agent Miller added, holding up certified court exhibits. “Ryan Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny, federal wire fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.”

Agent Miller pulled out pair of steel handcuffs.

“No! Stay away from me!” Ryan yelled, knocking over the podium as he tried to scramble off the back of the stage.

He tripped over his own oversized trousers, crashing face-first into the velvet curtain. Two federal agents pinned him to the floor, snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Patricia screamed, fainting outright on the stage as photographers captured every single second of the collapse.

As Ryan was dragged past me in handcuffs, he looked at me with pure desperation. “Claire! Please! Tell them it’s a mistake! I’ll give everything back! I’ll sign whatever you want! Just don’t let them take me to prison!”

I leaned down close to his ear, whispering so only he could hear:

“You told me yesterday that I served my purpose, Ryan. Now, it’s time for you to serve yours: twenty to life.”
