Chapter 10 - THE UNEXPECTED TWIST (THE FINAL CHAPTER)

The ballroom went dead silent. Every eye in the room turned from the dying Vincent on the stage up to the balcony where I stood, my breath coming in ragged gasps, the small silver gun still hot in my hands.
Vincent collapsed face-down onto the velvet carpet, motionless.
Nicholas didn't even glance back at his brother’s body. He turned his head slowly, looking up at the mezzanine balcony. His dark eyes locked onto mine, filled with a mixture of shock, awe, and an overwhelming heat that made my heart race.
"Clear the hall," Nicholas ordered calmly.
Within three minutes, Viktor and his men escorted every terrified guest, boss, and guard out of the Drake Hotel Grand Ballroom. The heavy mahogany doors were locked from the inside.
Only three people remained in the vast, silent hall: Nicholas, Viktor, and me.
I walked down the grand winding staircase, my heels clicking softly against the marble floor, my hands trembling as I slid the silver gun back into my thigh garter.
Nicholas met me at the bottom of the stairs. He reached out, his long fingers cupping my face gently, searching my eyes.
"You took the shot," Nicholas whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "You saved my life again, Nurse Clara."
"He was going to shoot you," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my blood. "And I have a strict rule about people trying to kill my patients."
A low, deep laugh escaped Nicholas’s chest. He pulled me close, wrapping his arm around my waist, his thumb gently caressing my jawline.
"You are extraordinary," he murmured, leaning in until his breath touched my lips. "The money is in your account. The private jet is waiting at O'Hare. You can leave tonight, Clara. You can go back to a normal life."
I looked up into his dark, hypnotic eyes. The man who had been trapped in Room 412, the boss who had brought down an empire, the monster who treated me like a queen.
"What if I don't want a normal life anymore?" I whispered.
Nicholas’s dark eyes flared with a sudden, fierce passion. He leaned down, pressing his lips against mine in a deep, fiery kiss that consumed every thought, every doubt, and every fear I had ever owned.
When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, he smiled—a real, breathtaking smile.
"Then welcome to the family, Clara," Nicholas whispered.
"Boss," Viktor’s deep voice interrupted from the stage, his tone unusually tense.
Nicholas turned, keeping his arm wrapped securely around my waist. "What is it, Viktor?"
Viktor was kneeling beside Vincent’s body on the stage. He held up a small, black electronic device that he had just pulled from Vincent’s inner coat pocket.
It was a satellite receiver, its red light blinking rapidly.
"Vincent didn't act alone, Boss," Viktor said, his face deathly serious. "This isn't a syndicate transmitter. It’s a Federal Bureau of Investigation tracking beacon."
My blood ran completely cold.
Nicholas’s expression turned to ice. He stepped up to the stage, looking down at the device in Viktor’s hand.
"The FBI?" Nicholas muttered.
"Vincent wasn't trying to take over the Outfit for himself," Viktor explained, pressing a button on the receiver. "He turned state's evidence six months ago. He made a deal with the Department of Justice to wiretap your hospital room and drain your assets in exchange for full immunity."
"That means..." I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth as a terrifying realization hit me. "The FBI knew everything? They knew I was in Room 412?!"
Suddenly, the heavy stained-glass windows of the Grand Ballroom shattered into a million pieces!
Flashbang grenades rained down from the ceiling, exploding with deafening BANGS and blinding white light!
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
High-tech tactical teams suspended on ropes dropped through the shattered glass dome above, their assault rifles equipped with red laser sights trained directly on Nicholas and me!
"Clara! Behind me!" Nicholas roared, pulling his 9mm pistol and shoving me behind his body.
Through the blinding smoke and flashing red lights, a tall woman in a sleek dark suit walked through the broken double doors of the ballroom. She held an FBI badge in her left hand and a Glock 19 in her right.
She stepped through the smoke, stopping ten feet away from us. Her cold blue eyes swept over Nicholas, then landed directly on me.
A slow, chilling smile spread across her face.
"Drop your weapons, Castellano," the woman said, her voice dripping with ice. "It’s over."
Nicholas raised his gun, pointing it at her forehead. "Agent Vance. You're too late. Vincent is dead. My records are destroyed."
"I don't care about Vincent, Nicholas," Agent Vance said calmly, taking another step forward. She turned her gaze to me, her smile widening into a terrifying smirk. "And I don't care about your offshore accounts."
She looked at me and said four words that shattered my entire world:
"Welcome back, Agent Jenkins."
I stood frozen.
Nicholas’s head snapped toward me, his dark eyes wide with utter shock, disbelief, and a sudden, heartbreaking betrayal.
"Clara...?" Nicholas whispered, his voice trembling for the first time since I had met him. "What is she talking about?"
I looked at Nicholas. The emerald dress, the trembling hands, the frightened nursing student persona—it all vanished in a single second.
I reached up to my neck, unclasping the diamond necklace, and pulled a hidden micro-flash drive from the pendant, tossing it calmly to Agent Vance.
"Mission accomplished, Director," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion, cold and precise. "Six months of fake coma monitoring. Full biometric data, encryption keys, and every syndicate boss in the Midwest recorded in one room."
Nicholas stared at me, his weapon slowly lowering as his world crumbled around him.
"You... were never a nurse?" Nicholas breathed, his heart breaking in his eyes. "The reading... the stories... the escape... it was all a setup?"
I looked at Nicholas, stepping away from him toward the tactical team surrounding us.
"My real name is Special Agent Clara Jenkins, Undercover Organized Crime Division," I said, looking into his eyes without flinching. "Room 412 wasn't your jail, Nicholas."
I pulled out my official badge from beneath my dress and held it up.
"It was our trap."
Nicholas stood in the center of the ruined ballroom, surrounded by fifty armed federal agents, holding his empty gun, looking at the only woman he had ever trusted—the woman who had just delivered him to a life sentence in a federal supermax prison.
A slow, dark, bitter smile touched Nicholas’s lips as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
"You played a very convincing liar, Clara," Nicholas whispered, his dark eyes burning into mine with an unshakeable, terrifying promise. "But remember what I told you in that hospital room..."

He leaned close as the agents dragged him away, his voice echoing in my ear one last time:
"I don't die easily. And I will come back for you."
