Chapter 7 - THE TIGHTENING NET

A chill ran down my spine. "Your own brother?"

"In my world, blood doesn't buy loyalty, Clara. It only buys opportunity," Nicholas said, pulling his hand back and walking over to a mahogany desk in the corner of the room. He picked up a glass poured with amber whiskey, taking a slow sip. "Vincent thought I was weak because I wanted to move our logistics network into legitimate shipping and renewable energy. He wanted to keep us in narcotics and human trafficking."

He turned back to me, the amber liquid swirling in his glass under the soft chandelier light.

"When I refused to sign the syndicate charter, he put five bullets in me. He kept me alive in Room 412 just long enough to extract my private encryption keys. And tomorrow night, he gathers the heads of the five Midwest families to formalize his control."

"Then don't go!" I pleaded, standing up from the stool. "You have your life back! You have your money! Viktor can get us out of the country tonight! Why risk going back into the lion's den?"

Nicholas took two slow steps toward me, his physical presence overwhelming the small surgical room.

"Because lions don't run from hyenas, Clara," he whispered, his eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding intensity. "If I run, Vincent spends the rest of his life hunting me down. He will hunt Viktor. He will hunt you. The only way to end a monster is to cut off its head in front of everyone who feared it."

He reached into his robe pocket and pulled out a sleek, black satellite phone, tossing it onto the table beside me.

"Your five million dollars has already been transferred to an encrypted Swiss account," Nicholas said. "There is a private jet standing by at O'Hare International Airport right now. Viktor can drive you there within the hour. You can fly to London, change your name, and never look back."

I looked at the phone. Then I looked at Nicholas.

The money was there. My freedom was standing right in front of me. I could leave this nightmare behind, forget about the gunshots, the steam explosions, and the blood on my scrubs. I could go back to being Clara Jenkins—or whoever I wanted to be.

"Why are you giving me the choice now?" I asked softly. "You could have forced me to stay."

Nicholas stared at me for a long, quiet moment. For the first time since I met him, the cold, ruthless mask of the mafia boss slipped, revealing something raw, lonely, and deeply human underneath.

"Because for six months, Clara," Nicholas said, his voice barely above a whisper, "everyone who looked at me saw a corpse, a throne, or a target. You were the only person who saw me. You read me stories when you thought I couldn't hear. You treated me like a man, not a monster."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch my wet hair, his fingers lingering against my neck.

"I won't trap you in my darkness," he added gently. "You're free to go."

My heart did a strange, erratic flutter in my chest. I looked at the phone, then looked at the dark, powerful man standing before me—a man who had spent three weeks lying completely paralyzed, trapped in his own mind, listening to my voice in the dark.

"What time is the meeting at the Drake Hotel?" I asked.

Nicholas blinked, surprise flashing across his dark features. "21:00 PM tomorrow. Why?"

I took a deep breath, stepping closer to him, my eyes steady.

"Because your surgical stitches need to be checked in twelve hours," I said, a faint, defiant smile touching my lips. "And someone has to make sure you don't flatline before you get your revenge."

Nicholas stared at me, astonished, before a low, rich laugh escaped his chest—a real, genuine sound that echoed through the room.

"You really are insane, Nurse Clara," he murmured, his dark eyes burning with admiration.

"I’m a nurse from the South Side of Chicago, Nicholas," I replied coolly. "We don't leave jobs unfinished."

Before Nicholas could answer, the security phone on the wall began to ring. Viktor answered it, listened for three seconds, and his face turned deathly pale.

"Boss," Viktor said, turning to Nicholas with urgent eyes. "We have a problem. Marco wasn't alone at the hospital. His team traced the satellite transponder on my SUV. They’re entering the outer gate right now."
