Chapter 13 - The Foundation of Tomorrow

Six months later, the Leo Vance Environmental Trust was officially launched at a public ceremony near the old trestle bridge.

As the executive director of the foundation, I stood at the podium facing a crowd of local citizens, environmental scientists, and federal officials. The sun shone brightly overhead, reflecting off the newly polished bronze memorial plaque dedicated to Leo.

“Ten years ago, my son’s father was silenced because he believed that clean water and corporate accountability mattered more than profit,” I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady, clear, and resonant. “For a long time, our family lived in the shadow of that silence. We believed that hiding was the only way to stay safe.”

I paused, looking out over the crowd. In the front row, Owen sat proudly between his grandparents, holding a small model airplane his grandfather had helped him build.

“But silence doesn't protect us,” I continued, a confident smile spreading across my face. “Truth does. Integrity does. And the refusal to let fear dictate our future is what truly keeps us safe. Today, the Leo Vance Trust opens its doors to fund independent water safety inspections across the entire Northeast, ensuring that no corporation can ever hide its poisons behind closed doors again.”

The applause that followed was deafening. Flashbulbs popped, and as I stepped down from the podium, Owen ran straight into my arms, nearly knocking me over.

“You were amazing, Mom!” Owen beamed, looking up at me with his bright, observant eyes. “When I grow up, I want to be an engineer just like my dad—and an accountant just like you!”

I laughed, kneeling down to hug him tightly. “You can be anything you want to be, sweetheart. Absolutely anything.”
