Chapter 3 - THE INTRUDER AT THE GATEStanding on the porch was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal wool overcoat, his hair slicked back from his face, his eyes wild and bloodshot from driving through the mountain storm.

Marcus Sterling—heir to a mid-sized manufacturing fortune—swaggered forward, fully expecting to tower over a terrified, destitute young mother.
Instead, he ran smack into the broad, unyielding chest of James Carter.
Marcus stumbled back a step, blinking in shock as he took in James’s tailored cashmere sweater, the quiet authority in his stance, and the cold, dead silence of a man who owned empires.
"Who the hell are you?" Marcus snapped, regaining his footing and trying to puff out his chest. "Where's my wife? Where are my daughters? I know they're in here!"
"Your wife?" James asked, his voice dangerously soft. "Strange. From the way she was shaking when you screamed at her, it looked more like a hostage situation."
Marcus sneered, trying to peer past James into the dimly lit living room where Rebecca and the twins sat frozen. "Stay out of this, old man! This is a domestic dispute! She took my kids without my permission! I've got a court order in my car that says those girls belong to me!"
"You don't have a court order," Rebecca called out, her voice suddenly ringing with fierce, protective strength as she stepped into the hallway, shielding Chloe and Clare behind her. "You have forged papers and a trail of intimidation, Marcus! You abandoned us six months ago when your company went belly-up and you spent our last savings on gambling debts!"
Marcus’s face twisted into an ugly, venomous scowl. "You shut your mouth, Rebecca! You're an unfit mother! You're living out of a car! The judge will hand me full custody by Tuesday morning, and you’ll never see a dime or a child again!"
He lunged forward, trying to push past James to grab Rebecca’s arm.
He didn't make it two inches.
James caught Marcus’s wrist in a grip of absolute steel. He twisted it slightly, just enough to bring the younger man up onto his toes, forcing him to look directly into eyes that had broken corporate executives twice his size.
"Let... let go of me! I'll sue you! I'll have you arrested for kidnapping!" Marcus shrieked in pain.
"Listen to me very carefully, Marcus," James whispered, his voice like grinding glaciers. "This is private property. Trespassing here is a felony. Threatening guests in my home is a mistake. And if you ever speak to Rebecca in that tone of voice again, you won't just lose a custody battle—you'll discover what happens when a man with infinite resources decides to wipe your entire existence off the map."
James shoved Marcus backward with enough force to send him sprawling off the porch into the snowbank below.
"Get off my mountain," James said coldly. "And don't look back."

Marcus scrambled up from the snow, sputtering curses, clutching his bruised wrist, and glaring with pure hatred. "This isn't over! You haven't heard the last of me, you arrogant bastard!"
He sprinted to his luxury sedan, tires spinning wildly in the slush as he tore down the winding dirt road and out of sight.
